The Course XIII Athena Cluster (7-321) has been gradually increasing its capablilties over the past few months. The purpose of this questionnaire is to familiarize everyone with whats been added and to find out what new capabilities would be most useful. When you're done just fold it up and send it back via interdepartmental mail.

@b(What We Just Got:)

The most noticeable additions to the athena cluster are a new plotter and a new RT workstation.

The plotter, which should be fully operational by mid-April, will provide users with the capability to create large scale plots (36 inches wide by miles long). These plots might be of SHCP output, ASSET lines plans, GENERICAD or PC AUTOCAD plots, or complex finite element diagrams. The plotter is presently being connected, and filters and routines generated to allow for HPGL, DM-PL, and DXF operations.

The RT terminal will eventually be used for file transfers between Athena and PC MS-DOS equipment. Unfortunately, Athena Operations has informed us that hardware problems will prevent implementation before June (hopefully of 1989). In the interim, a crash program is underway to use a surplus PC compatible in this application.

In addition the cluster's printer is to be upgraded to PostScript@+(@Y(R)) capability.

@b(What We Might Get:)

Several new ideas have come forth for the AACHU II (Annual Athena Cluster Hardware Upgrade 2) program. Some of these are listed below. @i(Please feel free to list other capabilities!) The Athena Cluster is here to support Course XIII; all I need to know is how. Please write in comments, and circle your preferences.

The workstation currently serving the plotter might be configured as a fully capable input/output workstation for OE. It would be configured as follows:

@begin(itemize)
The existing plotter, DMP-62

A new 24" x 36" HIPAD PLUS 9236 Digitizer

A dedicated PC compatible with Hard Drive, High Res Screen, and AutoCad
@end(itemize)

@end(transparent)

The Ocean Engineering Department could join forces with Mech E., Civil, Aero/Astro and other deparments and Athena to acquire a system wide CAD capability. This capability, with thesis-like efforts, could be supported by ship design programs such as SHCP, TSS86, SMP, and ASSET.
