Subj: Recent Events Regarding the Project

Drs. Thorpe, Weinishausen and I request a meeting in person with the
three of you to discuss the security of the Asylum research project.
A situation with far-reaching overtones has developed which will
require additional personnel and increased Security Directorate
involvement for an indefinite period of time.  We present here the
details of the situation so that you may decide on the appropriateness
of bringing this matter to the President of the University and/or the
Board of Regents.

The first matter concerns Ph.D. candidate Julia Echohawk.  We have
determined that Miss Echohawk has tampered with many of the inmates of
Asylum to an as yet undetermined extent.  We can only fear the worst,
for it has come quite clearly to our attention that she had become
known to a large segment of the population as "the Messiah".  Upon
discovering this, we cut her computer access and scheduled a standard
Conduct Board hearing (yesterday, 26 May) to discuss her case.
Unfortunately, she did not appear before the Board and an extensive
search of the area has, as yet, proven fruitless.  We will be
presenting a proposal to requisition troops from Galactic Security to
aid in our location efforts.

The second matter concerns a possible incursion into the Asylum by an
errant pair of Galactic citizens.  The details of this case are rather
hazy, but it has become clear that a privately-owned ship (most likely
of less than 400 tons displacement) landed on the planet on or near 8
May 1988 and at least two of its crew interacted with the inmates.
Galactic credits were found in circulation among people these two had
contacted, and wardens in the field report a potentially hazardous
level of speculation as to the actual origin of these people.  The two
suspected crew members disappeared late yesterday, and the security
network picked up radiation changes consistent with the departure of
a small hyper-drive-equipped craft.  These two men operated under the
identities of Pfeltch Eitmann and Kenstar Yte, and their composite
physical description is attached.

The third and most important matter concerns Ph.D. candidate Priscilla
Thompson.  We have determined that, because of personal philosophical
beliefs, Miss Thompson selected seven Asylum inmates (each of which
being an important member of various Asylum societies) and disclosed
to them, to a fair degree of detail, the existence and characteristics
of the project.

We conducted a fairly extensive fact-finding session (the transcript
of which is enclosed) and determined that Miss Thompson's actions had
caused a serious breach of Project security.  In compliance with
Psychology Department Directive I-A(2), we determined that the danger
of Miss Thompson's continued objections to the project necessitated
immediate action.

I believe I speak for Drs. Thorpe and Weinishausen when I say that we
understand the ramifications of our decision to mind-wipe Miss
Thompson.  We believe the incidents of the past week justify our
solution.

We propose to come to Galactic University on 15 June 1988 in order to
discuss these matters.  Please let us know if this is workable.

Please allow me to emphasize the importance of the Thompson matter.
The unprecedented actions of an Asylum warden combined with the
possibility of a large Type 1B project security leak necessitate a
high-level discussion of our possible courses of action.
