The Asylum Wardens have been functioning for several hundred years
now, and in tht time had gotten a little sloppy.  When asylum was
first instituted, everyone wanted to work here...now, manpower is
short, and survaillance has holes in it.  

The last couple of weeks have been ludicrous, though.  One warden
dead, another turns native, a native "wizard" gets picked up and
talks Tinker into letting him scramble all kinds of stuff onto the 
surface, signs that Computer Central has been tampered with--WHAT 
THE FUCK? says JMike.  Rather than allow anything else to go wrong, he
institutes a "security blanket" over his section.  All information
requests have to go through him, all requests for equipment have to go
through him, dammit, he's IN CHARGE!

This has disconcerted the wardens to no end, each for their own
reasons.  What none of them realizes (although "Peaches" suspects it)
is that Asylum was a very appropriate choice for an asylum planet.
Continued exposure to the planet, for unknown reasons, will bring out
abberant behavior in non-natives.  It's usually very subtle, only
severe trauma will bring it out in force.  JMike has gone
megalomaniacal, Hortz paranoid, Julia has gone megolomaniacal *and*
paranoid, Peaches is developing a persecution complex on top of a
variety of "psychosomatic" problems, Tygar and Nikolas are both
demonstrating obsessive-compulsive behavior and an extreme superiority
complex.  It works as follows:

Andril Hortz: rookie. computer whiz.  Had connections to Alamain
tyrants, responsible for slipping in rebel leader.  Knows about ship
crashing but kept it silent, worried that suspicion might fall on him.
Knew Tinker, feels guilty, trying to find ship/leader/agents and save
his own career.  Convinced he's been outcast because of his computer
tampering.  

Gerald Tygar: Seasoned veteran responsible for keeping Tesla and
Banthrogf from escalating into fullscale warfare.  He's remained
mostly sane, but is becoming obsessed with controlling the mewling
masses for their own good.  Knows about the Underfolk, and has
considered the possibility that their burrowing is responsible for the
computer glitches--highly bigoted, uses "diplomacy" as a means for
power to "help these poor savages". 

Priscilla Thompson:  Psychiatry major at GU, working here as part of a
thesis project.  Has begun to suspect the truth about this planet,
having detected signs of unpredictably abberant behavior in natives.
She had been doing computer research and becoming more and more
convinced, and had been planning to send a full report to her
superiors when the security blanket was introduced and she was stuck.
Now she's afraid that she's being hunted for having discovered the
truth, and that she's being affected as well...she's "discovered" all 
kinds of aberrant behavior in herself.  (power of suggestion)
Priscilla knows Julia is a fellow student, but doesn't know her
status, and feels she may be assigned to spy on her.

Nikolas Entrakt:  Assigned to the Underfolk, hastily reassigned as the
only active warden around still available to replace Tinker and
discover what happened to him.  Nikolas, however, has come to identify
heavily with the Underfolk and considers himself one of them, and has
been failing to report their technological advances.  If he could take
over the Wizard's Guild, he'd be able to lead "his folk" to victory
someday...  

Julia Echohawk:  Another aberrant-psych major, Julia quickly began to
feel sorry for these inmates and question the system that imprisoned
and lied to them.  She started studying them, and through therapy cured
a few of their delusions of grandeur(they thought they had magical
powers, which they did 'till she "cured" them).  She felt she had
found her calling, and started healing folk, both mentally and
physically, right and left.  She was hailed a messiah, soon coming to
believe it, and had planned to become the next Banthrogf high priest
(she had known, through the computers, that the old priest was
dying)--but she got caught and rendered inactive, her warden status
taken away, and the plan had been to take her off-planet.  The
security blanket froze all unauthorized entry into Thriff, however, so
that isn't going to happen for a while.
