Those ignorant, unseeing, cowardly fools! Half of them too afraid of
losing a few territories or a few soldiers, the other half too caught
up in their own intrigues, to see what needs to be done, and to do it.
If policy were left to them, the Realm would be allowed to fester
unobserved, uncontrolled, until it spewed forth still more of its
filth upon your lands and the People. Is it conceivable that you are
the only one with the vision and the courage to lead the Human Beings
to their necessary victory?

Thirty-five years ago the outsiders were discovered, which was the
beginning of it all. Then, at least, there was the Fist of the Clans,
a team of warriors who knew the glory of combat. You repelled the
invaders from your land and they responded with a "peace treaty"
promising to respect your rights in the future.

Your fellow humans made one basic mistake, and that was trusting the
Westerners to behave like humans. Indeed, there were those who argued
that immigration and free trade across the borders should be allowed
to go on unchecked and unobserved, although luckilly that idea was
vetoed in favor of simple isolation.

Even with that isolation, you heard stories of Clansmen and women who
had been taken into the Realm, or had moved there of their own
volition (the fools!), being abused by the Realm's own police force
and legal structure, if such a wretched hive of scum and villainy
could even claim to have a legal structure ... even then, though, no
action was taken by the Clasp. And so you, along with Dirk
Brightwind, revived the spirit of the original Fist, running rescue
missions across the border to free your fellow humans. In the
meantime, you rose to glory within your Clan and were eventually
chosen to lead it, and take your place in the Clasp.

But as your political load increased, you came to realize that there
were too many cases of Realm abuse for two men to arrive at a
resolution -- and even when Cord Sweetwater and Charity Goldenfield
joined your cause, there were still too few of you and too many of
them. And then came the final straw, for while you and your new Fist
was trying to undo the remaining damage from the first war against the
Westerners, your fellow members of the Clansman's Clasp chose to open
the borders to the West and undo the efforts of decades.

You fought against it, but were outnumbered -- even Marshall
Brightwind, who had once been of the original Fist, chose to side with
the others. Since then, you've realized that Marshall, for all his
bluff and bluster, is basically shortsighted and irresponsible. When
the two of you fought together, things were different, but when you
got to know him as a Senator you saw a side you'd never seen. He
showed a spark of backbone when the Clasp voted to allow the Left Hand
to practice magic legally -- that was infuriating, but there, again,
you were outvoted. Marshall seemed to share your fervent desire to
keep magic outlawed, but even so, you've lost count of the number of
Clasp meetings he's missed, or arrived at late. The last straw was
when he failed to arrive for the transport onto the Castle -- but at
least he, somehow, made his way onto the Castle. You don't know what
happened to change him, but you realize he can't be trusted to get the
job done.

That's why, when you finally realized that the Clasp was going to undo
the progress you'd made, you changed your tactics. If the Clans and
the Realm were going to associate, you argued, then it would be a
great benefit if the Clans had a single voice that could represent
them, as their King Rashid did during the first war. The Clansman's
Clasp is a debating league, one where the interests of all five Clans
are represented, and this is as it should be -- for internal affairs.
But when the Clasp is called upon to deal with outsiders, inhumans,
you argued, it becomes a hindrance; the Clasp is unable to function as
a unit. You are all violent individualists, and to come to an
agreement is a difficult chore.

It was for that reason that you suggested the sham title of "Senator
Prime," which you now hold. It was a risky card you played -- Senator
Prime was the title used by the Head of the Clearstones during their
reign over the Clans, and held dangerous emotional overtones. Of
course, the title itself bestowed you no authority over the rest of
the Clasp, but it did make you the voice of the Clasp in dealing with
outsiders -- specifically OutClansmen and Westerners. There was some
dissent, but you made it clear that the title would not interfere with
the functioning of the Clans, and eventually your side won out.

Occassionally, fate laughs at those she would raise up. You @i(still)
don't understand why, when you finally opened your borders to speak to
the Western King, you found that the Realm was now led by a "Table of
Peers," an organization similar in nature to the Clasp. Marshall took
no end of delight in your embarassment, and the Primacy became a
complete farce. You have the title, and in some sense, the legal
right to speak for the Clans -- but the true authority is not yours,
and to obtain it you would have to fight your own people.

Stymied within the Clasp, you returned to the Fist to solve the
problems you saw developing as the borderline between Clans and West
became even more ill-defined. And the solution appeared, finally, in
the person of Dodani Yitzhok.

Yitzhok was a Western smith of some kind, who sent a team of miners
out in search of mythril, which it seems is a material of some value
in the Realm. (In the Clanlands, of course, it is as common as any
other semi-precious stone, and Clearstone Mountain is full of it.)
You intercepted this team, and with a few pointed questions determined
how they could be used to circumvent the cowardice of your fellow Clan
Heads. Within several days, the team had begun mining the sides of
Clearstone Mountain, near the Shrine of Mishael -- and that was all it
took to trigger another war.

Since then, you and the Fist have been keeping the war going for
years. Sometimes this took more funds than you had available,
however, and so you occasionally would dip into the Clasp's treasury
for a loan -- and one day, you were caught by Mercy Goldenfield as she
inspected the Clasp's books. You might have been forced into drastic
action, but it proved unnecessary -- Mercy turned out to share many of
your goals and attitudes; she wanted to ensure that the boundaries
between Realm and Clans remained closed and that the war went on.

Shortly after that, you were introduced to Naptuhim Nahor, who turned
out to be in reality a Clan halfbreed who had been raised in the
Realm, and was looking to ensure that the Realm and the Clans didn't
destroy each other in the process of fighting. Nahor has become a
useful ally, and you've kept the secret of his being only half-human
to yourself.

Meanwhile, each of the Fist has been fighting in his or her own
fashion. Dirk has been repeatedly sneaking into the Realm in the last
month, working on a some plan involving the interception of
high-quality armor and weapons created for the Guard of the Realm.
The way Dirk described them, it seemed this shipment could tip the
balance of this war one way or the other, and you've known Dirk for
quite a few years -- he's a good soldier and he @i(doesn't)
exaggerate. The more you thought about it, the better the idea seemed
-- if you could procure the stuff for the Clans, it would be a
fantastic coup against Marshall. If you pulled it off right (for
example, not distributing the stuff to the Clans generals until
Marshall stepped down), you could use it to take over the military
commandership from him, and then the Fist would no longer have to
worry about being discovered or being illegal. Besides, with the
capacity to win the war by honest combat available, perhaps you'll be
able to convince the rest of the Clasp to return the use of magic to
its former illegal status, as it should be.

Dirk said you should have received it several days ago, but as yet
nothing has materialized -- you should speak to him about it. You
haven't heard from Charity or Cord recently, although they are both on
the Castle, along with Nahor and Mercy. Mercy, in particular, has
been having some problems lately -- where she used to be in regular
attendance at Clasp meetings, filling the place of the Lady Joy
Greystone, Joy has now decided to take a part in political life and
Mercy has been therefore unable to take part in the meetings of the
Clasp. Unfortunate, since her voice in support of your own has made
the manipulation of the Clasp possible on certain occassions.

In any case, it is important to retain your focus and remember who
your enemies truly are. Despite the potential moderating influences
of Mercy and Nahor, who seem to prefer peaceful separation to ultimate
victory, and despite the fact that the current incarnation of the Fist
is quite illegal, you must ensure that the Clasp is not duped into a
peace that will serve only to give the Realm a chance for betrayal.
You must prevent this treaty from being signed, and do what you can to
weaken or destroy the Realm's military strength. The future of
humanity rests in your hands, and your ancestors are strong through
you. The powers of nations are waiting to be applied in your noble
cause. Luck, the patron of the weak, holds no place in your plans --
you @i(will) succeed, as your fathers have before you. It is your
destiny.
