Barak, why do these things happen to you?

You should have known that your past would come back to haunt you, but
why did it have to come back with such a vengeance? You had been in a
powerful position on the Shadow Cabinet of the thieve's guild, being
in charge of all the gambling operations, a major source of revenue
for the Guild. As far as you can tell, you were well on
your way to being named the successor to the Shadowlord, when an old
"acquaintance" showed up; Lord Soth.

Back in your younger days, when you were impressionable, you were a
scout in the Realm army. You hated the job. You just were not
patient enough to take orders from those who took orders themselves.
Your immediate superiors seemed to have no will of their own. Your
prospects for advancement were small, and would take alot of time.
You needed a quick way to come to power or wealth to satisfy your
desires. During one of your particularly nasty brooding periods while
you were getting drunk in a bar, you met Lord Soth.

He seemed to have been eaves-dropping on your ramblings, and had
determined that you were just what he was looking for. He told you
that he had a way for you to get wealth quickly, and remove your
immediate superiors from the picture. If played right, you could
become a hero, thus advancing at a much quicker pace. Being drunk,
the idea sounded good to you, so you followed him to a private room
for more details on what he was offering.

This guy had a vengeful streak that surpassed any you had seen before,
and you've known several homicidal maniacs before. Apparently, he had
been a former Rose Warrior, but had been cast out due yo some
questionable actions he had performed in the past. He said that he
now worked with the Clans to some extent, though he took orders from
noone. Despite his vengeful nature, you saw several traits in him
that you had yourself. You decided to help him, ... for an
appropriate price.

He talked for several hours about the injustice done to him, but it
all boiled down to he wanted revenge against the Rose Warriors, or
what remained of them. Your commander in the Army was Benjamin
Zanannim, the former head of the Rose Warriors. You let Soth know
that a large campaign was being planned against a Clan stronghold.
Together you worked out a plan to have the batallion ambushed by the
Clans, and have Benjamin blamed for the leak of information to the
Clans. The first part was easy, since you were a scout and could lead
the batallion to a predetermined place where the Clan army would be
waiting. Soth said he would take care of the second part of the plan.

Sure enough, the betrayal worked perfectly, .. to a point. The
batallion was decimated (you were safely scouting elsewhere at the
time), and you returned to save one soldier for the propaganda. As
the two of you returned back to the Realm, you fed him the story that
you had overheard Benjamin talking with a Clansman the night before,
and that he must have set up the ambush. Your choice of soldier
turned out to be extremely fortuitous, as he is now Malachai Jonah, a
peer of the Realm! You got a promotion from this action, but later
retired from the army to work in the thieves guild. As is usual with
such people, Jonah quickly forgot about you, but he didn't forget
about Benjamin. He probably still holds a grudge.

Benjamin was brought up on charges of treason after he escaped from
the Clans. Unlike Soth's plan, though, he was acquitted due to his
past service to the Realm. He disappeared shortly after that,
probably due to the pressure of the families of those who died in the
battle. You're sure that Soth probably fumed over this, but as per
your agreement, you received a portion of mithril from your part of
the plan, and the two of were not supposed to meet after that. You
thought you had seen the last of Lord Soth.

This was not meant to be.

As mentioned before, you took the promotion in the army, but you still
were not satisfied. You were getting the power you wanted, but not
the wealth. The military was horrible when it came to salary.
Fortunately, something better came up. Through friends, you
pinpointed the location of the Realm Thieves' Guild. You had a knack
for thieving, so 'introduced' yourself to the guild by robbing a
member of the Shadow cabinet. You then told them of your
accomplishment, and asked to join the Cabinet. The 'object' you took
was quite embarassing, so your application was accepted. At this
point, you retired from the army.

The Guild was having problems with funding, as the tithes vollected
from local businesses was dipping. The current Shadowlord was lax in
using the 'insurance file', the list that Guild used to ensure that
members remained loyal. The file listed all illegal actions each
thief committed, and if there were any signs of disloyalty, the
information would 'leak' to the Guard of the Realm. No lower level
thief knew enough to harm the members of the Shadow Cabinet, and being
a member of the Cabinet was so lucrative that they wouldn't turn each
other in. Therefore, the Guild was fairly safe, as long as procedure
was followed. The Shadowlord was slipping, though. Morale was
slipping, as a couple minor thieves started withholding funds, and
found no retribution. Word was starting to get out. Less funds
started coming in. Also, there were new groups ripping off the
Guildsmen who were paying tithes. The net result was less money for
the Guild. A new source of funding was needed.

You came up with an idea. In some places, gambling was legal, but far
too public. You knew there were people who wished to gamble without
having to worry about their images. The Thieves Guild could provide
them with this service. Thus the illegal gambling ring was started.
Since it was your idea, you were put in charge of the running of the
ring. As expected, it was a big boon to the Guild funds, as there
were many people that wished to gamble in secret. Things were working
well for you and the Guild.

Then one day, you ran into Soth in the streets. He was always clever,
and somehow he got the information that you were on the Shadow
Cabinet. This time, though, he wasn't acting as a buddy. He reminded
you about your role in the framing of Benjamin, and he said that he
still had proof that you were responsible for allthose deaths. He
never mentioned a threat, but it was hanging in the air. He told you
that he had a friend he wanted you to meet the next day. You had no
choice, you made the appointment.

Soth's 'friend' was Victor Greystone, an influential senator for the
Clans. He referred to Soth as Scorpion Greystone, and told you to do
so also. It seems that Victor is not only a Clan-head, but he was
also the head of the Right Hand, the Clan equivalent of the Thieves'
Guild, and they were thinking of expanding. To do this, they wished
to see the downfall, or at least the weakening of the Guild. They
wanted your help. In return for your aid, Victor was willing to make
you his successor by marrying you to his daughter Joy, and would give
you protection and asylum among the clans. Victor didn't seem to know
about the framing of Benjamin, so didn't realize that you were
actually forced into the situation, so you haggled for awhile, but
eventually agreed.

Remembering the problems the Guild had before with funds, you thought
the best course of action would be to sap the funds, or completely
take them. You could attach a teleport stone to the mithril in the
vaults, and use the energy from the mythril itself to transport it
away. After this point, the Right Hand could come in and offer better
service, thus diminishing the Guild even more. The only thing needed
in the plan was a way for you to get away from the Guild safely.
Again, luck was on your side.

One day, you found evidence that one of your underlings in the
gambling racket was actually a member of the Shadow Guard. You gave
her a shock one day by cornering her, and revealing that you knew
this. She was prepared to fight for her life when you sprung the
surprise.

You went to Eve. You told her that you would turn State's evidence
about the Shadow Cabinet if she helped you with the scam. She only
knows that you are tired of working for the Guild, and wished to get a
new identity and lots of money to give them any information they
wanted about the Guild and its workings. She jumped at the bait.
Thus your escape route. You had no intention of turning state's
evidence, as that would get you killed, but this provided a way for
you to get to Victor after the theft.

You started setting things up. You sent a note to Victor to
coordinate things. You bought a teleport stone at a local jeweler.
You found out a time that the Cabinet would not be around, close
enough to the time of the conference on the Castle so the confusion
from that would cover your trail. Finally, the day came. You took
your stone and went to the Guild Vaults. You used the combination
only the ShadowLord knew (you stole it, of course), and opened the
vault,... just one more step ...

Only, the vault was empty! Either someone had beaten you to it, or
the Shadow Lord had been skimming the funds all along. You decided
that you'd better get out of there, and quick! It didn't really
matter that you didn't have the mythril. What mattered was that the
Guild @i(didn't). And they don't. Unfortunately as you were leaving,
you were seen running away. You're sure they have checked the vault
by now, and assumed that you stole the funds. You needed a new
identity quickly. You met Eve, and she came through. A wizard gave
you a new body, and you were no longer Barak of the Shadow Cabinet,
but Lamech, secretary to someone named Nimrod. You don't know this
Nimrod, but that matters little. You just need to contact Victor and
get out of this situation. That is your first order of business.

How do you get yourself into these situations?
