@MajorHeading(@value(realname))

There is a right and a wrong in the Universe, and the distinction is
not difficult to make for a man of honor. But there are so few men of
honor around...

You are Nineveh Nimrod, first-born son of Hagar, and recently
appointed Head of Internal Security for the Realm. It's a job you are
eminently suited for, and the truth is you would have been given it
long ago if it hadn't been for Nahum's grandstand play at the start of
the war catching those two traitorous witches, Jade and Ivory. Lucky
break, but it got him that promotion and left you walking a beat for
another four years.

Not just any beat, either, but the Veil district, an area of town you
hated with a passion. It was named for the House of the Veil, which
was certainly a hive for all sorts of criminal activity, but you were
never able to make anything stick on them, hamstrung as you were by
the law and by your Oath. The closest you ever came to actually
catching any of those bitches was a couple of years ago, when you
passed by the House and heard a cacaphonous disturbance from inside.
Breaking through the doorway to investigate you were blinded by a
flurry of feathers and fur...only to find three girls doing disgusting
things with a headless chicken. The floor was covered with blood, and
there were dead animals all over, but they never got to court--you
never actually saw them commiting any crimes, after all. To be
honest, for all you know they may have been engaging in some
abominable sexual rite; disgusting to be sure but not illegal.

Four years of that sort of thing was enough to drive a lesser man
to frustration. Finally you were vindicated, though, when Job the
Justiciar died, nine months ago. Of course Nahum managed another of
his convenient miracles, tracing Job's death to witchcraft from the
East, and so he was appointed Justiciar--but you were finally given
the post you deserved, as Head of Internal Security. There, with the
freedom to make your own decisions and an Oath that geve you more
leeway, you could start to make a difference.

It was around that time that you met Clerrik Milcah, one of the few
people you've ever known who understands the balance of good and evil
in the World, and has the moral strength to place himself
unquestioningly on your side, the side of Right. Together, the two of
you forged the Holy Order of Whitefire, the nucleus of what will
someday become a great brotherhood dedicated to defeating Evil.

In the past nine months, the Order has remained mostly behind the
scenes, obtaining information with which to act and trying to increase
in numbers. Your third recruit was D'odani Yitzhok, the Master Smith,
another man of honor. And it was largely through his efforts that you
began to act to fulfill your tenets. It was Yitzhok who became
suspicious of Segwina, the Red-Robed mage, fearing she was betraying
the Realm and her fellow human beings to collude with Easterners,
particularly the same Eastern witches who killed Job.

Milcah was horrified, and he explained that Segwina was almost
certainly up for the Heirophancy come the Stellar Equinox, and if she
truly was a traitoress the harm she could cause would be unimaginable.
You had to find out the truth. Luckilly, Milcah had a truth-spell
available to him, and so the two of you confronted Segwina, intending
to subdue and interrogate her.

You were outside of her chambers when you heard her say, with great
intensity, "The Eastern Hand is raised again!". You burst into her
chambers, and found her staring intently out the window. She was
holding a smoking candle, and surrounded by piles of paper. She
whirled at your entrance, and raised her hands, as if to spell you,
when Milcah interfered; you took that opportunity to attack. Between
the three of you you rendered her unconscious, bound her, and Milcah
cast the truth-spell.

"Are you a witch?" was Milcah's first question -- ill-chosen, you
thought, since she could easily @i(not) be a witch and still be a
traitoress -- and you were surprised to hear her answer "Yes."

By the Creator, Yitzok had been right! She @i(was) working with
those unhuman creatures!

"List the names, goals, and membership of every organization you
belong to, in decreasing order of loyalty."

It was a good question, if somewhat broad. But instead of answering,
Segwina began to writhe and mumble nonsense. Milcah repeated the
question, more forcefully, and she began to scream, thrashing back and
forth against her bonds, and suddenly she sprang free.

You reacted without thinking, bringing your truncheon rapidly into
contact with her skull. She fell, unconscious--or so you thought.
When you inspected the bruise, however, you realized she was dead of
shock. The fate she deserved as a traitor, of course, but it was
unfortunate that you got no information from her. Or hadn't you ...
scattered by her thrashing were her notes, written in some sort of
code. Perhaps if you could break that code, you'd be able to figure
out exactly what she and her witchy Eastern compatriots were planning.

You now have a direction to look in, as well as an urgency to
your task. The inhuman witches must not be allowed to destroy the
Realm under the cover of peace, or through their evil infiltration
tactics. That is not only the Order's task, it is the job of the
Guard of the Realm as well--this "Eastern hand" must be stopped.

You felt badly for your fellow Guardsmen -- the same Oath that bound
you and kept you from interfering with the obviously guilty continued
to bind them, seriously decreasing their effectiveness. The solution,
in your eyes, was to create a group of undercover agents, guards of
the Realm not bound to wear badges. They would have to eb the cream
of the incoming hopefuls, their loyalty to the Realm beyond question,
and willing to work ever so slightly outside of the law, and for the
Right. Thus was born the Shadow Guard -- Mitrani Lyon (your feed from
the College of the Seventh Day's Work, and the House of the Veil ),
Ankari Hastor (her contact), Hazarnaveth Gomer (your tie-in with the
drug trade) and Abimael Eve (who'd made it work for one of the
higher-ups in the Thieve's Guild, Barak, and gotten him to turn
state's evidence. He's here on the Castle, posing as your new
secretary, Jeveron Lamech).

It's not as if there weren't enough happening for the Guard to
deal with. In the last month, the number of petty thefts and assaults
in the Capital City has practically doubled, and the distressing fact
is that the normal, everyday crimes have been the least of your
problems. The bizarre crimes are the ones clamorring for attention.

Twelve corpses, naked and foulsmelling, killed by a single swordstrike
through the chest and left without souls, were discovered by your
officers several days ago. Clearly they were the victims of
jivatmaya, soul-destroying weapons, the mark of the Circle of
Bloodletters. One of those bodies was that of Niharan Kestor, one of
your officers, and another Ankari Hastor, Lyon's contact.

Four more bodies, mauled beyond recognition, were found in the
countryside surrounding Capitol City at nearly the same time.

Zephaniah Terhanna, assaulted on her way home by an unidentified male,
but untouched and unrobbed. Also, her alchemist's shop was attacked
by a band of thieves, and when Guardsmen arrived at the scene of the
crime they found the thieves dead, an old man in the armor of a Crown
Warrior, dying, and the girl herself draped over his body.

The Capital City Art Gallery, broken into several days ago-- llo-Guard
Aram captured the thieves, but two missing paintings seem to have
vanished into thin air...

Mahalael Jeremiah, son of the Peer, Enoch, who vanished mysteriously,
and whose house was broken into and ransacked--and who appeared,
equally mysteriously, shortly before you arrived at the Castle,
unharmed. His disappearance was reported by Hazarnaveth Gomer.

And the unusual case of Gomer, who was brought into custody by Aram as
an unlicensed drug dealer, and who was shortly thereafter released
without trial -- on your orders (after you'd given hima good chewing
out for clumsiness). Aram came storming into your office demanding to
know why you had released him, but you sent the boy away. There was
no way to explain your actions with out revealing the existence of the
Shadow Guard, so you didn't explain.

And of course, the death of the House of the Spear's representative,
Segwina. At least you know you don't have to worry about that, since
she was a traitoress after all, but until you can gather some evidence
to prove it you may be better off keeping that a secret of the Holy
Order of Whitefire. Besides, the Guard, particularly Nahum, just
wouldn't understand--they are defending the law, you are defending
Right and eliminating the servants of Evil. And surely evil is strong
on this Castle, and has many servants.

But you are on the side of Right, and so Evil stands no chance if you
are watchful and vigilant. With the aid of your Guardsmen, and the
Holy Order, you shall find the agents of Evil and eradicate them. The
gods themselves bless your holy work.
