Why are you here? Why? Whatever possessed you to take on an
assignment to Kalerege's Cloud Castle, of all places? Not that you
have anything against Kalerege, you don't even know the guy, but you
know one thing about him -- he's a Great Wizard. And that means one
thing: he has magic. You @i(hate) magic. So why are you here, on a
Castle that flies by it, in the home of a man who lives by it?

Well, a lot of it is because of the Ptaavs, particularly Moses. He
has some idea that the bunch of you can do something on the Castle
that will help win you equality throughout the World. Wouldn't that
be something? You've been a ptaav all your life, and you can't
remember a time when you weren't looked down upon by your fellow
Citizens for it. Not that they ever admitted it, but it just so
happened that you were passed over for promotions and lost jobs to
other, non-ptaav candidates...and whenever you pushed for an
explanation you were told that the job required communication skills,
or transportation skills, etc. And, of course, no ptaav could perform
such activities, not in a world where magic is a part of everyday
life.

The last straw was when your own father offered to apprentice you to
the House of the Veil. Daddy was a soldier, had been all his life,
and you had intended to follow in his footsteps; his implication that
your body was your only asset was one you resented. So, mostly to
spite Daddy, you applied to the Guard of the Realm.

You were surprised at first, when they accepted you. When the Eastern
War was declared shortly thereafter, you understood just how badly
you'd been duped. By then it was too late, of course; you were
shipped off to the front, to the fighting.

You've been a soldier for 5 years now. Daddy died in a raid on the
borderlands, you've never heard all the details. He always was a
patriot. You, on the other hand, are and always have been a
pragmatist. With your handicap, you can't afford not to be. Thus,
despite your Oath, you have not always acted in the Realm's best
interests. You have not always enforced the law, and have in fact
broken the law on several occasions. And the Guardsman's Badge,
supposed Guardian of that Oath, has done nothing. It has glowed
contentedly, while you have engaged in theft and treason.

You aren't entirely certain why, but you have some ideas. It's
possible, and it would be delicious irony if true, that the same
handicap that keeps you from using magic has prevented that particular
item from affecting you at all. In which case you are free of the
Oath you took under false pretenses.

Of course, you've kept this a secret; nobody knows the truth. Not
even your fellow Ptaavs, since you've only just met them recently.
The Ptaavs are a secret organization whose purpose is to provide
equality to your people; all of you are ptaavs with exceptional
talents. You're not really sure how they propose to go about doing
this, but hopefully that will be resolved soon.

The only person who might have some idea that you are unbound by Oath
is Dirk Brightwind, an Eastern soldier who has been your partner in
treason for a while. He offered you a section of his Eastern
territories in exchange for your cooperation in some illegal military
shenanigans. At first you weren't interested, but when you realized
that ownership of the land itself implied rulership of the people
there, the deal became a lot more interesting. You could never really
become successful as a Realm soldier, but as a Duchess ... yeah, that
was something you could really sink your teeth into. And in a country
without magic!

So you agreed. He explained that the Wizard's Conclave was working on
enchanting some cases of armor and weapons, to deliver to the Guard.
He wanted that crate, and he planned for you to intercept it before it
reached the Justiciar, and send them to his superior, the leader of
the Iron Gauntlet. He handed you a packet with instructions, and took
off.

Well, you got the crate without a hitch. But when you opened the
packet, you realized a horrible error had occured. Inside it were two
devices that glowed in the manner of all magical items. One was a
standard magical miniaturizer, and the other was labelled a package
transporter. The instructions said to place the shrunken crate upon
the package transporter disk, then address, invoke and activate the
transporter. All of which was so much garbage for you.

You weren't going to give up on your duchy that easily, though. Dirk
had specified the House of the Veil as a dropoff point if something
went wrong with the transmission (you don't know quite what to make of
that), but you had to get the damn crate shrunk to size first, and you
couldn't do it yourself.

The closest thing you knew to a mage you trusted was Moses. He's a
ptaav, but really clever and he knows an awful lot about magic, enough
so that he's been an apprentice for months! He's really great. So
you told him a little bit about your problem, and how you needed to
get the crate shrunk down to size. He said he'd do something about
it; and sure enough, the next day he returned the crate to you,
shrunk. Wow. Well, you owe him a favor, maybe you'll get a chance to
repay it.

Anyway, with the crate a managable size, you brought it to the House
of the Veil. You had never been there before, not after your father's
comment, and after that one visit you understood why -- a den of
iniquity, it was! That bejeweled, bedecked, Clanswoman, making all
sorts of suggestive remarks, as if you could even be interested in --
that! @comment [knowledge packet: Charity] You nearly stormed out, but
you did have a job to do. And then you saw Ankari Kastor there! You
couldn't believe it. Kastor was a fellow Guardsman; for him to lower
himself to frequenting such an establishment ... it was disgusting!

Despite all that, you got the crate to the dropoff point, along with a
note explaining that "the transporter didn't work". Now all that
remains is to collect your payment from Dirk, a payment that will end
a lifetime of oppression and humiliation. Perhaps, working with the
Ptaavs, you'll even be able to do the same thing for all of your
fellow ptaavs, in another fashion. All in all, this promises to be a
busy couple of weeks, but you get the feeling you're going to enjoy
them.
