@part(clannames, root="/mit/abstract/Characters/sheet.format") @section(Clan names and their significance) The naming of a clansman is a simple and straightforward matter. Every Clansman has three names: @begin [itemize] His @b[personal name] is given to them at birth, and identifies them to both their family and their Clan. His @b[family name] is only of significance with a given Clan. Certain families tend to hold a given positions within a given Clan; it is unlikely, however that a member of one Clan would know (or be overly interested) in the family politics of another Clan. The @b[Clan name] is the all-important identifier for any Clansman. Thier first loyalty within the Clans is to their Clan; within their Clan, it is to their family. @end [itemize] There are specific conventions for the use of a Clansman's three names. For example, among family, the Clansman Tiger Sharpclaw Bluemist is known simply by his personal name (i.e., Tiger). To other members of his Clan (the Bluemists), he is known by both his personal and family name (i.e., Tiger Sharpclaw). To other Clansmen (and as a recent convention, to the Westerners), he is known by his personal name and his Clan name (i.e., Tiger Bluemist). Those who are OutClan, and thus have no rights under Clan law, are required to address him as Tiger Bluemist, even if they were once part of his family or Clan.
