Locating Books At Other Libraries

To locate books in other local research libraries, you may:


1.  Search the online catalogs of the Boston Library Consortium (BLC).
    To access the BLC Gateway, type:

		add library
		library 

at the Athena prompt.  Then:

        Select BLC and press Y to connect
        User name:  MIT
        Select 1 for BLC InfoSource
        When prompted to identify terminal type, press 5 for dial-up
        or 8 for workstation
        Select 1 for Union List

    If you are working at an Athena workstation, follow this sequence:
        Pull down the "Special" menu from the Athena Dash
        Select MIT Libraries --> MIT Library Services

    A Library mneu window will open. By clicking on Other Library
    Catalogs, you may then select BLC, Hollis (Harvard Library Catalog),
    or Other Online Catalogs.

You may use the collections of the BLC libraries, but may not borrow
unless your work requires extensive use of materials not available at
MIT.  In that case, you may qualify for a BLC card, which enables you
to borrow materials from another BLC Library; the Reference staff can
advise you on this option.

2.  Search the location of a book on FirstSearch in the WorldCat
    database, which lists more than 30 million bibliographic records
    of all types of materials.
    To enter FirstSearch, type 

		add library
		tfirst 

at the Athena prompt.

When you find the item you want, type LIB to see which libraries own
it.  Libraries in Massachusetts appear first.  You may use books in
other academic libraries, but not borrow them unless you obtain a BLC
card or use the Harvard libraries.  See OWL Stock answers under Boston

the book through Interlibrary Borrowing, you may invoke the "Order"
option and follow instructions at the bottom of the screen.
