From: bmurphy@PEDEV.Columbia.NCR.COM (Bill Murphy) Karak's Sail Repair is a small shop in the seedier portion of the docks area. Here Karak Huglo (Karak the Red) and his mute assistant Ethrya run a small sail mending operation. The shop is an old wooden building marked only by the faded letters "SAIL REPAIRS" painted on the door. The one window into the shop is always shuttered. On entering the shop a person's eyes will take a moment to adjust to the minimal light provided by a couple of small lanterns while their nose adjusts to the dusty odor. Typically Karak will be seated at the back of the shop behind a large counter drinking (although never too heavily) or lightly sleeping. At the front of the entrance room Ethrya will usually be on her hands and knees slowly mending a small sail. The shop is only open about 50% of the time during normal working hours. Anyone seeking to have a large, or several sails mended, will have their business refused as Karak will claim he is much too busy to fit in any extra work. Any small job will be accepted. Karak doesn't want to get too tied down since his real business is a small scale smuggling operation. The back room, behind Karak's desk, is filled with miscellaneous boxes, sails, supplies, etc. It also contains a trap door which leads to a ladder going down below the docks to the water. This is where Karak's "profitable" goods are delivered. Karak deals mainly with established contacts although he will accept new business if he can get a reference from one of his contacts. Karak's deliveries are usually made at night by row boat. His sales typically go out the front door wrapped up in a freshly mended sail. Karak's favorite sales item is Lytreta , an hallucinogenic drug. In order to smuggle other items Karak will have to be assured of high profits (i.e. slaves) or low risk (untaxed items). Karak pays a small monthly fee to the Thieve's Guild for protection and business references. Character: Karak the Red Karak, a man of medium height and build, is easily recognized by his dark red hair and beard. Karak is a small time smuggler residing in the area near the docks. Karak will smuggle anything that is profitable preferably smaller cargos such as illegal drugs, untaxed liquors etc.. Karak is also not above smuggling slaves into/out of Tabolport although the extra effort involved forces him to seek a higher profit. Karak due to his laziness however is content with the easier (less profitable) cargoes. Karak has been involved in smuggling in the Tabolport area for about three years. Karak decided to reside in Tabolport after wandering about for several years following his escape from a ship crew into which he had been pressed. Karak was grabbed by a press gang at age 17 and spent seven years at sea gaining several worthwhile sailing and fighting skills in the process. Karak also picked up his bitter attitude toward society as a result of his lost years of youth. Character: Ethrya the Mute Ethrya is quite literally Karak's slave. He took her as payment for an earlier job. She's originally from across the Northern sea. Ethrya is rather plain in appearance, small, but healthy from the work Karak always has her up to. Ethrya works totally out of fear of Karak, and rightly so since he cut out her tongue upon acquiring her, and can not be convinced to even attempt trying to escape because she knows Karak will hunt her down and slowly kill her.
