TechInfo V MAC0.9 Beta Test Copyright ©1990 by Network Services of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology This document describes the TechInfo Macintosh application. WHAT IS TECHINFO? TechInfo is an electronic document retrieval system using the MITnet. All documents are public and contain information on a variety of topics such as campus events, class schedules, job openings and services provided by MIT academic and administrative offices. Selected documents from Tech Talk, i/s and MIT's Policies and Procedures are also available. WHAT YOU NEED TO USE TECHINFO FOR THE MAC MacTCP on you Macintosh If you are already running TechMail, you have the MacTCP library. Look in you System Folder to make sure. If you have not installed this software, call the Network Services Help Desk at 253-4101 for a copy. An MITnet Connection, You can have either of two kinds of connections to MITnet, either 1. A Mac with an Ethernet card and a connection to the MITnet or 2. A Mac on an AppleTalk network with a Kinetics FathPath or similar box connecting it to the MITnet. If your Macintosh does not have access to MITnet via one of the above, use the standard dialup access to TechInfo. For information on how to dial up this Service, call the Network Services Help Desk at 253-4101. HOW TO USE TECHINFO FOR THE MAC Double click on the TechInfo icon. When the Disclaimer Notice appears, read it and click on Continue to view the Main Menu of TechInfo. HOW TO GET UPDATED VERSIONS OF TECHINFO FOR THE MAC You can get TechInfo updates in two ways. The first way is to call the Network Services Help Desk (x3-4101) and ask for it. The second way is to collect it via FTP over MITnet. To do this you need MacIP 4.0 or HyperFTP BinHex 4.0 or StuffIt 1.5 (DON'T use BinHex 5.0) How To Get Updated TechInfo Versions Over MITnet 1. Start FTP 2. Connect to net-dist.mit.edu 3. Logon as anonymous. Use your name as the password, it it's requested. 4. At the FTP> prompt, enter "cd /pub/techinfo" 5. To copy the new version to TechInfo to your hard disk, enter "get TechInfo.hqx". 6. To Close or Logoff your connection to net-dist.mit.edu, enter "bye". To leave FTP, quit as from any Macintosh application. 7. Run your BinHex software (BinHex 4.0 or StuffIt 1.5) program, decoding TechInfo.hqx into TechInfo.
