NewtonUnlock v2.1 ________________________________________________________________________ What is NewtonUnlock? ________________________________________________________________________ NewtonUnlock is a small (9k) utility which allows you to bypass the password protection on a Newton. There is also a 6k help file that may be loaded for online help. ________________________________________________________________________ How do I use NewtonUnlock? ________________________________________________________________________ Loading... You load NewtonUnlock onto your Newton in the same manner as you do other packages. The NewtonUnlock Help can be loaded in the same manner. Running... Run NewtonUnlock from the "Extras" drawer. Tap the "Remove Password" button, and it will remove the password protection. This action can be undone. For help on using NewtonUnlock, tap the "Help" button next to the close box. Removing... You remove NewtonUnlock the same way that you remove other packages. If you have installed many packages, I recommend using "RemoveIt!" by Allan Marcus. If you installed NewtonUnlock onto a store other than the internal store, NewtonUnlock will remove itself when you remove that store. If you want to permanently remove it from that store, then you need to remove it the way you remove other packages. Remove NewtonUnlock Help in the same manner. ________________________________________________________________________ How does NewtonUnlock work? ________________________________________________________________________ If NewtonUnlock is stored on a card, simply install the card when the Newton asks for the password. Wait for the Newton to read the card, and "poof" you're into the Newton. If NewtonUnlock is stored on the internal RAM, do a reset. The password screen will close soon after opening, and you're into the Newton. Once into your Newton, run NewtonUnlock from the "Extras" drawer and remove the password. ________________________________________________________________________ How much does NewtonUnlock cost? ________________________________________________________________________ Use of NewtonUnlock is free of charge. Please pass it around. ________________________________________________________________________ Who do I contact for comments and problems? ________________________________________________________________________ Send comments and bug reports to: Jeremy Wyld USMail: 1004 E. Market, Iowa City, IA 52245 Internet: jeremy-wyld@uiowa.edu NewtonMail: jwyld@eworld.com or jwyld@online.apple.com ________________________________________________________________________ Known Bugs ________________________________________________________________________ If the password protection is turned on or off from inside "Prefs" while NewtonUnlock is open, the "Remove Password" button will not reflect the changes. This is a problem with the built-in "Prefs" package (hopefully to be fixed). To work around this, simply close NewtonUnlock and open it again. If the screen is smaller than 130 pixels in width or 40 pixels in height, the NewtonUnlock package will not run from the "Extras" drawer. It will still supply the functionality to get into a Newton. To work around this, ...mail me an idea. I could resize the button down to something close to nothing. This won't be a problem till the watch-size Newtons come out anyway. :^) ________________________________________________________________________ Version History ________________________________________________________________________ v1 - first public release v2.0 - added "BroadCast" for soup changes, help book, smaller view, navigation to the password slip, undo, and checks for certain slots (SleepScreen, passwordSlip, etc.). Not released. v2.1 - view is now draggable, made help an auto package so people do not have to install it, and added a more intuitive way of getting help. This version also places logs in the notification to allow someone to check if their Newton was broken into.
