PickExtras version 1.08!
========================

Yet another Revision of a Newton hack from Bill Kearney.

©1994 William Kearney & The Novanto Group

This simple app will add a pop-up list to your Extras button. This list contains all the currently installed apps in your Newton. Tapping on one of the items will launch the selected app. It also supports digital books.

PickExtras does not appear in the Extras drawer or anywhere else. You'll only see it if you tap the top half of the Extras button.

It's Install/Remove polite and will not leave anything behind in your Newton. It does not create any soups. You can put it on your card, eject and reinsert the into a friend's Newton and PickExtras will work! It won't alter the Newton since the app follows the card.

Disclaimer
==========

This product is currently in beta test. It's not known to have any bugs or defects that would impair the use of your Newton. However, it is possible something unforseen could go wrong. We cannot be held responsible for any loss of info or the usage of your Newton. Please back up your Newton before installing this package!

Known bugs:
===========

PickExtras does support the Card built-in app. This is due to some funky checking that needs to be done before calling the card app (BackupSlip). You don't DARE call the card app if there's no card installed. <Hey Apple, is this a "feature" or a "bug"?> The error checking to look for the card balloons the code up a couple of bytes, so I left it out.

This was a quick hack for my own personal use. I've released it to the ShareWare system. I retain all rights to it. If you'd like to distribute it, you must get my e-mail permission first. If you like it, let me know. My address is:

No, it's not a bug, PickExtras does not show the Sharp app. Does anyone actually bother with the crappy importing from Wizards?

Revision history:
=================

6/12 - version 1.08
A near complete rewrite!
Now uses a smaller font in the menu for MORE apps!
This required doing some undocumented stuff, but it's not likely to break.
Now closes itself on a card eject, it's now totally "Grip o' Death" proof.

6/11 - versions 1.05-7
You don't to know... They were really messy...

6/8 - version 1.04
Small bug fix in opening demo package after expiration date

6/8 - version 1.03
Total rewrite to support card ejecting better.
Now supports being internal or external.
Also updates menu every time for consistency.
Does not sort the menu, is this a desired feature?

3/18 - version 1.02
Support for books added.
Error handling for removed apps implemented.
Sorting of the app list added.

3/17 - version 1.01
First release to ShareWare system.

3/16 - no version number
Resurrection of the old code, added a dynamic list of the installed apps.

11/93 - no version number
A quick hack that was hard coded to a few beta test apps

Shareware

A note from the author
======================

For those of you who've read my other product ReadMe files, this may seem a bit tame. I've been a rather vocal critic of user support for shareware. I certainly don't envision making a mint off of these products, but it's nice to see folks put their dollars behind my efforts. If you like products like Assistance! and want to see others of it's kind, you need to support the authors who create them. So, please, send your fees today! If not to me, at least to another author.

If you've got some critcisms about my products, I welcome feedback. Bugs reports are also needed. If you like it, but don't want to cough up a few bucks, at least send me a e-mail message saying you've seen it and like it. I promise not to harass you too much!

Thanks for your time and enjoy using PickExtras!
