3/2012 SCHILLER CHALET Welcome friends, family, and guests. To get to the "Schiller Chalet", take 93 North through Franconia Notch. At the end of the Franconia Notch Parkway, take the exit 35 for 3 North to Twin Mountain. At the junction with 302, take 302 East (right turn). About 5 miles later, look for the Irving station on your left. Very shortly thereafter, you will see a sign for Bretton Woods on your right. Turn into Bretton Woods. Note the Sports Center on your right. The dumpster is behind the Sports Center. At the first (very short) intersection, turn left onto Remick Lane. The sign may say "Crawford Ridge" on your right and "Remick Lane" on your left. Follow Remick Lane up the hill to an intersection. The road continues downhill, you need to turn right and keep going uphill. When you see the sign for Rosebrook Townhouses (stone pillars on each side of the road), look for the stairs on the left. Our unit is just to the right of those stairs. We are #17. Please watch for ice on the walkways and stairs. You can park in the lots either above or below our unit. Parking is "perpendicular", not "parallel". Please don't park in front of stairs or walkways. The "first floor" is the ground floor, and we count the levels up from there. The living room is on the second floor and the main entrance is between floors 1 and 2. Important Things When you arrive, the water will be off. Go into the hot tub room, through the closet door (under the TV) to the furnace room. (The furnace room is directly below the entry.) There are two water shutoffs, one next to the furnace (marked on the wall) and one near the floor in the corner. We usually only turn off the one closer to the furnace, marked "Water #2". In the winter, we always drain the pipes before we go home to prevent a frozen pipe catastrophe if the heat fails. If it seems very cold in the unit (below freezing) don't turn the water on! Check the thermostats -- we leave it set to 60 when we leave. If there seems to be a problem with the heat, call Northeast Services at 603-278-7584 or call us! Also, the power is not very reliable. If you have a flashlight or battery operated alarm clock, these items might be handy. Sleeping Quarters There are 3 bedrooms. The top floor is the "master bedroom" (ours). Since we don't expect guests to use it, the sheets and towels aren't always fresh. On the third floor, there are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a twin bed and bunk beds. The bunk beds are sturdy, though the ladder isn't designed for big kids or adults (use a chair). (Note if you have small children: Both bunk beds have plastic mattress covers.) In the living room (second floor) there is a pull-out queen sized couch. There is a roll-a-way cot in the basement closet, as well as a queen sized inflate-a-bed. The twin bed and queen sized bed are the more comfortable beds for adults. Please, please, please! Sleep *between* the sheets. Only use the pillows with pillow cases on them (not the fancy shams) for sleeping. Even if you only want to sleep on top of the bed, put a sheet down first. We don't have laundry facilities that can wash the blankets, pillows, and comforters. It doesn't matter that you are wearing pajams (or whatever), you should only be in contact with sheets and pillow cases. Housekeeping Linens and Towels are in the third floor closet. Twin sheets are on the left and queen sheets on the right. There are also additional towels in the closet outside the first floor bathroom. There are small hotel-style shampoos, soaps, and miscellaneous toiletries in the third floor bathroom if you have forgotten yours. Please be sure to replace any sheets or towels that you use before you leave and put the dirty linens by the washing machine. If you have time, you are welcome to wash and dry them. Please don't put the green/red towels in with other linens, as they shed large amounts of lint. The washing machine and drier are on the first floor. The washer size is "small", which is smaller than "regular". One half scoop or half capful of the Tide is just about right. You need to put powdered soap in first or you will get soap clumps. Also, the washer can't handle a full load of towels (6 towels maximum, maybe less) and you'll need to listen during the spin cycle for an unbalanced load. The drier's lint filter is in the door. The plants aren't real. Please don't water them. Paper goods are on the top shelf of the closet outside the first floor bathroom. Kitchen Privileges You are welcome to use any condiments in the kitchen (ketchup, mustard, relish, mayo, sugar, salt, tea, coffee, etc.) If we are out of something, please let us know. The convenience store by the Irving station is well stocked with emergency/quick food items. You can also have sandwiches made there, as well as fresh pizza. Grocery stores in NH (including Irving's) sell beer and wine. Please wash all dishes and pots/pans in the dish washer. It tends to do a good job sterilizing the dishes to avoid spreading colds, etc. You aren't doing us a favor by handwashing dishes. The majority of the pots and pans are in the drawer under the oven and in the cupboard immediately to the left. If you need to clean the glass top stove with something more stronger than a wet sponge, there is glass top cleaner under the sink. Don't use abrasives. Food storage containers are above the sink. If you need to bring leftovers home, just return the containers to us in Arlington. Where to Eat If you wish to eat in the Mt. Washington Hotel dining room for dinner, reservations and jackets are required. Fabyan's (next to the Irving's) has American style food (burgers, etc). No reservations are required, lunch & dinner. Try to get there very early, like before 6pm or you might wait a long time during busy seasons. (They are in a historic building and only have a small kitchen.) Takeout is available. Catalano's is a pizza/sandwich place in Twin Mt. on 302. The Irving station in Bretton Woods (also owned by Catalano) also makes pizza. Stickney's in the basement of the big hotel often has lunch and occasionally dinner. In all cases, you should call to check hours. Monroe's Family Restaurant in Twin Mountain on rt. 3 has breakfast and lunch every day and some nights they are open for early dinner. There is a snack bar & restaurant in the downhill base lodge that serves breakfast, lunch & light dinner during ski season. The Top o' Quad Restaurant serves lunch during ski season. Away from Bretton Woods, in Littleton at exit 42 off of 93, there are a number of restaurants. In North Woodstock (exit 32), we like the Woodstock Station, but they can be crowded on weekends. We also like Joseph's Spaghetti Shed (dinner) and Glen Junction Restaurant (breakfast, lunch) in Glen, by StoryLand. The Hot Tub You are welcome to use the hot tub (MUST be willing to work with with the chlorine chemicals). See separate hot tub instructions. TV/VCR/DVD The VCR & DVD in the living room feeds both the TV in the living room and the TV in the hot tub room. There is a switch to the left of the TV to choose between the VCR or DVD. If you want to watch cable channels, this must be set to VCR. When the VCR is on, use the VCR remote to change channels. Both TVs need be set to channel 3 for the VCR. The TV in the hot tub room is an old fashioned TV with no remote and only channels 2-13. By cabling it the way we have, we avoid subjecting a VCR or DVD to chlorine and humidity in the hot tub room, but can still watch tapes/dvds and all the cable channels. You can rent video tapes at the Sports Club. Fire Place Wood is included in our condo fee. You can use as much as you want. Extra wood is in the shed outside the condo. Feel free to bring in wood and put it in the storage area next to the fireplace. To open the fireplace damper, reach up inside the fireplace and look for a metal loop on the left. If it is down, the damper is open, and up, the damper is closed. Please close the damper once the fire has cooled off. There are also vent adjustments on the top and bottom of the fireplace screen that you may need to adjust for proper air flow up the chimney if you want to keep the glass doors closed. The Sports Club We have a membership in the sports club at the entrance to Bretton Woods. There is a swimming pool, steam sauna, hot tub, exercise room, etc. Ask us where the guest passes are located. The hours are 9-9, and you need to sign in and present a pass to get a locker key. There may be a fee to use the sports club. Misc Condo Stuff Quiet hours are after 10pm. You may open the windows and skylights on the top floor to get air flow through the unit (in the summer only, please!). Make sure you open the window shade before the skylight! Close the skylights if you'll be gone for a while or if it looks like it might rain, and definitely before you leave. DO NOT OPEN WINDOWS IN THE WINTER! If you are too hot, turn down the thermostat or take a walk outside. As far as the heat goes, we prefer that you keep the thermostats at 65 degrees. Under *no* circumstances should they be set above 68. Turn the thermostats down to 60 degrees when you leave (in the winter). There are 3 zones to the heating system, each with its own thermostat (the small round ones). One is in the kitchen, one in the living room, and one in a third floor bedroom. The furnace is fired by propane (expensive!) The phone is on a private phone system. Local calls include anything in the Bretton Woods resort (278 exchange) or Twin Mountain (846). Please bill any long distance calls to your home phone/credit card. The default long distance carrier is AT&T. Our phone number is 603-278-3730. The resort main number (for the hotels, restaurants, ski area, etc.) is 603-278-1000. Verizon cell phones sometimes work, AT&T ones usually do. The first aid kit is in the first floor medicine cabinet. There is 24 hour Irving station in Plymouth at exit 25, rt. 175A. They also have coffee. When You Leave... When you leave, please make sure that fresh linens are on the beds, all appliances are off (double check stove, oven), hot tub heat is turned down, and all three thermostats are turned down to 60 degrees (in the winter). Run the dishwasher and put away all clean dishes (do not leave in dishwasher!) If there are any dirty dishes, rinse them clean and leave in the sink. Run the garbage disposal after the dishwasher is finished or it will be siezed up next time we come! Turn off the water (always) and drain the pipes (only in winter). Double check that the sliding doors are properly latched. Close all draperies. Close the skylights. Throw out or take back with you all perishables that you brought. Put back the guest passes and spare keys. Double check that the door to the condo is locked. Take the trash to the dumpster behind the Sports Center. *** NOTE CHANGE *** You may need a magnetic sensor key to get into the dumpster area. You can borrow one at the sports club desk. If we are missing any supplies (trash bags, TP, laundry soap, etc.), please let us know. If the place is looking a little too lived in, please also let us know so that we can call cinderella.
