            WORKSHOP ON SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENT INTERCHANGE

                         September 3-4, 1987
                     Carnegie Mellon University
                      Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

                            Sponsored by
                     Carnegie Mellon University
                       University of Michigan
                     National Science Foundation

Electronic mail is increasingly being used within the scientific
community for the exchange of working papers, articles, research
proposals and more informal communication. Technology presently
available to most researchers limits such interchange to simple text
documents.

With the advent of more powerful, graphics-oriented personal
computers and workstations, a demand is growing to be able to
exchange documents containing equations, line drawings, scanned
images, and more sophisticated text incorporating multiple fonts and
type sizes. The National Science Foundation, throught its EXPRES
project (Experimental Research in Electronic Submission) is
supporting the development and trial deployment of systems capable of
exchanging "compound documents," such as NSF proposals, containing
information in multiple formats.

Key to the success of the EXPRES project is the eventual support by
users and software developers of a standard format for representing
compound documents, so that they may be exchanged among diverse
computer and software systems.

The purpose of this workshop on Scientific Document Interchange is to
explore emerging international standards for compound document
interchange; assess the suitability of these standards for meeting
the needs of the scientific community; and to formulate an agenda
for: the further development of document interchange standards,
influencing vendors to support standards, and experiments in the
exchange of documents using these standards. Invitees to the
workshop will include representatives of :

   - academic institutions actively involved in developing
     compound document editing systems,

   - vendors of hardware and software systems widely used by
     academic researchers,

   - representatives of groups concerned with electronic
submission of scientific manuscripts for publication.

The workshop will be designed to encourage active discussion and
exchange of views among the participants.
