USA WINS SILVER IN SPEEDSKATING: The USA's Olympic short-track speedskating women's relay team won a silver medal Thursday. It was the USA's 8th medal of the Games. Canada won in the world-record time of 4:36.62, followed by the U.S. in 4:37.85. The Unified Team was third. Also Thursday, the USA's Julie Parisien finished fourth in the women's slalom, 0.05 seconds from a medal. Petra Kronberger of Austria won the gold. USA FACES UNIFIED TEAM: The U.S. hockey team meets the Unified Team Friday in a rematch of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic classic. Team USA will be hoping for a repeat of 1980, when the team went on to win the gold. The U.S. team will be assured of a medal with a win. Also, U.S. women Kristi Yamaguchi and Nancy Kerrigan have the opportunity to finish 1-2 in figure skating when the competition raps up Friday. TOP TENNIS PLAYERS FALL: Top seed Michael Stich lost to Amos Mansdorf 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 Thursday in a third-round match in the U.S. Pro Indoor Tennis Tournament at Philadelphia. In the $1 million Eurocard Classic in Stuttgart, Germany, third-seeded Boris Becker and No. 4 Ivan Lendl lost Thursday. Unseeded Jan Siemerink ousted Becker 6-3, 6-4, and Alexander Volkov of Russia outlasted Lendl 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-1. WATSON HAS EDGE: Tom Watson, Robert Wrenn and Brad Faxon are tied for the lead in the Buick Invitational after Thursday's first-round action. Watson, who shot a record-tying 63 on the 7,000-yard south course, says he has a slight advantage going into the second round. "I have a slim advantage playing the north (Friday)," Watson said. TRACK RECORD FALLS: One of track's oldest world indoor records fell Thursday as Kenyan Moses Kiptanui broke Belgian Emiel Putteman's 19-year-old 3,000-meters mark.
