Belgian Bart Wuyts upset No. 8 Jonas Svensson 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. NORTH STARS TOP DEVILS: The Minnesota North Stars downed the New Jersey Devils 3-1 Monday in the only NHL game. Gaetan Duschesne had a goal and an assist in the win, which snapped a four-game losing streak for the North Stars. New Jersey is 0-2-1 since its six-game winning streak ended last week. NHL NEGOTIATING RESUMES: Representatives of the NHL Owners Council and the NHL Players Association traded counterproposals for a collective bargaining agreement in New York Monday in the first negotiation session since Sept. 25. NHL President John Ziegler and Players Association executive director Bob Goodenow will meet soon with the next full negotiating session set for March 9. OLSON CASE SETTLED: On the day the case was scheduled to go to trial, sportswriter Lisa Olson settled her sexual harassment lawsuit Monday against the New England Patriots and owner Victor Kiam. "There is a financial settlement, but the amount and details are confidential," said Michael Avery, Olson's attorney. Olson said she was harassed by players in 1990 while she was working for the Boston Herald. NFL PENSION RULING STANDS: The Supreme Court Monday let stand lower court rulings entitling the NFL's Bert Bell pension plan to at least $29 million and perhaps as much as $38 million in back payments and interest. Joseph Yablonski, lawyer for the pension plan's player trustees, said Baltimore federal court Judge Joseph C. Howard has been asked to release $29,376,000 from the court's registry. BAD NEWS FOR RED SOX: The Boston Red Sox received more bad news Monday when it was learned that first baseman Carlos Quintana was injured in an automobile accident in Venezuela and may be out four months. The mood at spring training was already down due to owner Jean Yawkey's condition worsening to very serious after a stroke last week. Quintana had surgery for a broken humerus bone in his left arm. ITALY WINS REMATCH: For the second consecutive day in the America's Cup challenger trials, Italy's Il Moro di Venezia syndicate defeated Japan's Nippon Challenge. Sunday the Italians won by 11 seconds and Monday they won by just 46 seconds in the races off San Diego. Monday's race was a rematch ordered by an international jury after Japan protested Italy's win on Sunday. NO RECOMMENDATION YET: The San Mateo County (Calif.) District Attorney's Office does not expect to get a recommendation until Wednesday by the Menlo Park police on whether to prosecute San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. for an alleged assault on a female acquaintance Feb. 11.
