When I lived in sunny but somewhat arid silicon valley, our
house had an huge, lush redwood tree in the front yard.
We often wondered how it survived, as we were far from the
mountains, and our neighbors had, at best, live oaks and
palms to complement their dead, brown grass.

When our drains stopped working, the roto-guy came and fixed
them. He put a big X through the warrentee part of the contract
though; he had been drilling through solid redwood, and informed
us that our pipes had been crushed an assimilated long ago.
Oddly, live redwood makes OK piping - it continued
to give us good service for several years, until I moved away,
and it stayed nice and green...
