ETHERPEEK v4.1 RELEASE NOVEMBER 7TH
The beta releases of EtherPeek v. 4.1 have enjoyed a few weeks
of very vigorous testing by many of you, and we wish to again
express our thanks for your help in working out the bugs.

Based on your reports and our QA work, we have a final candidate
that will ship on Tuesday, November 7th.

WebStats Analysis Module. A few of the additions include:
- Graphing of any Node, Protocol, or Summary Statistic over time
- Threshold Alarms now available for any Node, Protocol or Summary Stat
- New Internet Attack Plug-in tests for LAND Attacks, Tear Drop Attacks,
Gin Attacks, Jolt Attacks, Oversize IP Attacks, Pimp Attacks,
   RipTrace Attacks and WinNuke Attacks

TOKENPEEK v4.1
TokenPeek version 4.1 is expected to be released the week of
November 6th.

802.11b PACKET DETECTION/DECODING SURVEY
Recently, we announced that WildPackets will be supporting 802.11b
with a product release in late 2000. We are on track to deliver
a version 1.0 tool that will include basic wireless packet
analysis, but need your feedback to define what a "basic" set of
features should include.

We need to know what packet analysis features are most urgently needed
in a wireless network environment. If you are capturing packets on
802.11b with a protocol analyzer, what packets would you expect to see?

(a) Only the packets transferring in and out of the wireless machine
     running the protocol analyzer software.
(b) All packets that are being transmit on the same RF channel on
which the machine running the protocol analyzer is connected.
(c) All packets on all RF channels on the air in the vicinity of
the machine running the protocol analyzer.

If you do have a wireless network and could tell us what network
management facility you require, it would really help us
define the product more closely and deliver a first release product
more quickly.

Please send your comments to janice@wildpackets.com. THANK YOU!

WEBSTATS ANALYSIS MODULE SHIPPING NOVEMBER 7TH
Election day will also be the first shipping day for the
new WebStats Analysis Module.

WebStats enables you to use EtherPeek to go beyond packet
capture and inspection to analyze the dataflow that represents
your internet presence. WebStats exploits our patented WatchPoint
technology to provide vital statistics for the TCP client/server
transactions on your network.

WebStats requires EtherPeek 4.1 or higher. EtherPeek must be installed
and run at least once for the current user, to ensure that the appropriat=
e
directories already exist. The WebStats module runs under Windows 95/98,
Win Me, NT4 (Service Pack 3 or better), or Windows 2000. For 10 Mbit Ethe=
rnet
networks, WebStats requires at least a 400 MHz Pentium II with 128 MB or
more of RAM. For 100 Mbit Ethernet networks, WebStats requires a 600 MHz
Pentium II with 256 MB of RAM or better.

WebStats is an EtherPeek upgrade option that can be ordered now.
Maintenance owners receive a 20% discount from the $595.00 USD SRP.

NEW! NAPSTER PLUG-IN
Recently, there have been a spate of requests from our customers
concerning the detection and analysis of Napster traffic on their
network. Specifically, users want EtherPeek to be able to provide
bandwidth utilization for Napster traffic and discover who is
actually responsible for putting Napster traffic on the network
in their organization.

To address these concerns, we have developed a new Napster Plug-in
that has a list of common Napster ports (which are user-configurable
through the Plug-in Options Dialog) which it processes. It sends
Informational notifications when it sees Napster login, search, or
download packets. It also keeps Summary Stats for those same items
(number of logins, searches, and downloads) plus total packets and
bytes used by Napster. This is all made more useful due to the fact
that you can graph or make alarms based on these statistics.

Want to graph Napster utilization of your network over time? Just set
up an advanced filter by Napster Plug-in. Want to receive a page or
an email when someone starts a Napster download? No problem.

NEW INTERNET ATTACK PLUG-IN FOR ETHERPEEK V4.1
A new Internet Attack Plug-in will ship as a standard part of the
version 4.1 release of EtherPeek. This Plug-in will replace the
LAND Attack and Oversize IP (Ping of Death) Plug-ins that have
previously shipped with EtherPeek. Please see the list of
features associated with the 4.1 release above for an idea
of the various attacks that can be detected with this new
Plug-in.

LATEST DECODERS AVAILABLE
EtherPeek's decoder files are now being updated separately from
the program. To make certain that new decoders are delivered to
EtherPeek users as soon as they are released, we have established a
new decodersbeta folder to house the latest work.

The URL to access the latest beta decoders, including a Read Me with
change history notes and upgrade instructions is:
ftp://decodersbeta:merlot@ftp.wildpackets.com/root/decodersbeta/

NETDOPPLER...WHEN PINGING IS NOT ENOUGH!
NetDoppler is a powerful, Windows-based utility that performs route
discovery, latency tests, and throughput tests to remote hosts.
NetDoppler builds a tree of IP nodes representing the packet path
and is ready to perform serious testing and baselining from the
moment you install it. There's no need for specialized software such
as SNMP or remote monitoring agents!

NetDoppler utilizes several features of the ICMP Echo (Ping), IP,
and DNS protocols to perform a variety of tasks and tests on remote
hosts, and provides extensive statistics and graphing functions to
easily interpret your results.

Unique to NetDoppler is the ability to perform throughput tests based
on both a single packet as well as packet streams to a remote host and
back. This allows you to test the effect of latency on a client/server
application that sends a single packet and receives a single reply
(i.e. a 1:1 command/reply window) vs. an application that is able to
send and receive multiple packets in succession to "fill the pipe" betwee=
n
the client and server.

NetDoppler will be available for purchase through the WildPackets'
Web Store by November 15th. The price for the utility is $149 USD.

Please visit the product pages at www.wildpackets.com later this month
for more NetDoppler product information

PACKETSCRUBBER(TM) - NEW! - PROTECTS YOUR PACKET TRACES
PacketScrubber is a new utility that removes sensitive or confidential
data from frames within your protocol analyzer's saved trace files.
Selected data is changed to "null data" (all zeros) allowing you to send
your trace files outside of your organization for analysis or
troubleshooting purposes.

PacketScrubber contains SmartScrub(tm) technology, allowing you to scrub
frames on a selective basis. SmartScrub has the ability to scrub layer by
layer and protocol by protocol. If you want to scrub the entire DLC frame=
,
leaving no network layer or higher layer information at all, SmartScrub
affords you that capability. If you want to only scrub your file
transfers, then SmartScrub allows you to only change FTP packets.

For IP packets, you also have the option of translating your IP addresses
to the default private class address range (as recommended by RFC 1918) o=
r
any address of your choosing.

PacketScrubber will be available for purchase through the WildPackets'
Web Store by November 15th. The Introductory price for the utility is
$99 USD, regularly $169 SRP.

Please visit the product pages at www.wildpackets.com later this month
for more PacketScrubber product information.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT Q&A
Q: I know you can use a wildcard to specify a class C space when setting
up an address IP filter, such as 192.216.124.*. Is there any way to
easily specify my space when my subnet mask is 255.255.255.192?
I don't want to have to set it up using advanced filter with values
of each of the IP addresses.

A: Yes. There is a new feature in EtherPeek for Windows 4.1 to use CIDR
notation to specify a subnet. In prior versions of EtherPeek, you
could identify a class C space with a wildcard. In EtherPeek 4.1 that
class C space can be identified as 192.216.124.* or 192.216.124.0/24.
Customers who have applied subnetting to their IP address space can n=
ow
use the CIDR notation in the IP address filter. So for your address s=
pace
based on a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192, which provides for 64 host
addresses, you can specify the particular subnet in the filter as, fo=
r
example, 192.216.124.128/26. This will filter all IP addresses in the
range 192.216.124.128 to 192.216.124.191. Note that this range includ=
es
the subnet ID (192.216.124.128) and the subnet broadcast address
(192.216.124.191) as well as the 62 valid host addresses (192.216.124=
.129
    to 192.216.124.190).
