Subject: Steering Wheel Removal

Mike,

About the steering wheel removal: I had the very same question about 6
months ago. I had already damaged the original steering wheel in an attempt
to get it off with a puller. I had a new wheel to install but was trying to
salvage the old wheel. Gord Souter wrote me on the list-serve reporting
that he had never found a steering wheel that couldn't be removed by
grabbing it firmly and pulling it off by hand. You can check the archives
for my original posting and Gord's response.
Basically if you grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and pull on one side
then the other, rocking the wheel back and forth, it should break free after
about 5 pulls. I remember, in my case, nothing happened at first. I was
about to write Gord back to report his idea didn't work. At the last
minute, I moved my hands to the 12 and 6 o'clock position and tried again.
The wheel "popped" and slid right off. Good luck.

I was just about to write the whole story over again.

Gord souter.

the trick is to pull litely after a hard wiggle.

I am surprised nobody else has asked...
Are they OK?
What happened?
Whose car is that?

I have installed my single wire alternator and so far it works as
advertised. I used a GM 60 amp because that's what I had laying around.
I get 14.7 volts at idle and 14.8 volts at 60 MPH. The lower bracket
mounted to the original generator mount on the engine and I made an
adjustable bracket for the top. A new 43 inch belt and a single wire to
the battery. Total cost was $45.

 Thanks Mike,

This evening I will try the grab and tug approach first. If that fails I will follow up with you.

mike...

Your wife was correct..... the amphi in the ad is definitely green..... my
car was used in the "shoot" last fall in Minneapolis..... the art director
is a friend of mine.... the theme of "taking the plunge" only refers to
....getting married. And your comment about the missing passenger visor
reminded me to request the availability of the white plastic device that
screws to the frame that holds the visor in place... does anyone have an
extra one?....I have tried for years to replicate it. I certainly could use
it . Thanks.

The other way that works well is;

1 - Loosen the nut until it is about even with the end of the stud so
as to protect the threads.

2 - Situate your knees behind the wheel, firmly pushing up with your
knees.

3 - Use a deadblow or ball-peen hammer and strike (firm, but not real
hard) the nut a few times while exerting steady upward pressure on
the wheel with your knees. Rocking it back and forth can help too.

3 or 4 hits should have it in your hands.

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION,

Before you pull on that steering wheel, be sure you have the nut that holds
it on turned down at least two turns. When it lets go, and it will, you
don't
want to swallow the center of it, or at the very least, leave an impression
of your teeth on it because it will lower the value of the car. LOL
