Back by popular demand, for parents and expectant parents at MIT and
in the community:

Two workshops series are being offered this coming week, bringing
popular presenters back to campus on parenting topics....

I. A New Workshop Series on Setting Limits

A new three-part workshop series will begin this coming Tuesday
(March 6) at noon that offers a variety of ideas and opportunities
for problem-solving about discipline and limit-setting with children
ages 3 through 10.

The series will be presented by Deborah Weinstock-Savoy, in response
to requests from the community to invite Deborah back after a
"sell-out" presentation on this topic last fall.

The series is free of charge and open to the public. Enrollment is
limited to 15, and registration is required. To register, contact the
Family Resource Center at frc@mit.edu or 253-1592, giving us your
name, telephone number, email address, mailing address, and the name
of the workshop, "Understanding Parenting Styles." A fuller
description is below:

------------------------------
Understanding Parenting Styles (Discipline with Style)
Three-Part Series
Tuesday, March 6, 13, and 20
12:00 to 1:30 PM
Room 16-151
Discipline is not a "one size fits all" proposition. Parents quickly
discover that the limit-setting approaches that work beautifully for
one child--or parent--fail miserably for another. This three-part
workshop will offer insights about how to adapt parenting techniques
to meet the needs of each individual child, while remaining true to
one's personal values. Exercises will help participants to identify
each child's natural personality style, as well as their own, based
on Myers-Briggs Personality Type theory. Discussion will include
exchange of ideas for setting effective limits while nurturing each
child's self-confidence and self-esteem. Appropriate for those
raising children ages 3 to 10.
Leader: Deborah Weinstock-Savoy, Ph.D., parenting education
consultant, Lexington

II. A Workshop Series for Expectant Parents

A four-part series continues this coming Thursday (March 8) at noon,
and newcomers are welcome. The series explores the practical and
emotional challenges of preparing for the arrival of one's first
baby, presented by Betsy Ross, a psychotherapist who specializes in
new and expectant parenthood.

The series is free of charge and open to the public. Enrollment is
limited to 15, and registration is required. To register, contact the
Family Resource Center at frc@mit.edu or 253-1592, giving us your
name, telephone number, email address, and the name of the workshop,
"Preparing for a Baby." A fuller description is below:

----------------------------
Preparing for a Baby
Four-Part Series
Thursdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22
12:00 to 1:15 PM
Room 16-151
While childbirth and adoption classes can prepare parents for the
birth process and neonatal care, how do mothers and fathers prepare
for the emotional and practical changes that follow a baby's arrival?
This four-part series for women and men anticipating the birth or
adoption of a baby will offer information and discussion on such
topics as common maternal myths, normal and abnormal postpartum
reactions, getting started as a parent, handling isolation, building
a support system, and finding places to buy new and used baby clothes
and equipment.
