I will bet one ice cold beverage to be served at Celina that the problem
with Tommys top frame is it was repaired WRONG the first time. The front
header bow is at wrong angle. I'll bet that cold beverage is that in its
past it cracked like most do then welded together incorrectly. Another
spot is that pivot point over rear window. Hugh has sheet with the easy
to do repair. A slight bend in side bar is not some back woods repair.
If you need to bend inches out then it is clear that the frame is
wacked. I think this might be a good repair for newsletter. Most cars
suffer from some form of this. The reality is the frames are of poor
quality almost made as an after thought. The tops shrink and then the
frames get bent and broken by forcing them to lock in up position. Later

Dave,

My guess is that "very rare lead-sealed string around the
steering column" adds about 20 grand to the price. :>)

Hi, What if I cut about 6" out of that bar on the top frame, then weld a
short but heavy turn buckle into the gap. They make beautiful stainless
enclosed turnbuckles that are used with wire rope. So tell me what you think.
 - Has anyone figured out what actually happens to the top frame to let it
sag? What part has bent or wore or twisted or whatever it did? Tommy in
Tampa - with the saggy top blues

I did not rewire my gauge . I added two gaskets one under the sending unit
and one under the gauge. I retapped the gas tank to u.s. 10/24 and gauge to
u.s.6/32 thread and used nylon bolts. you need to run a battery positive
wire to one mounting bolt on each unit to complete the circuit on the now
isolated gauge and sending unit. I put a fuse in battery feed wire, use a
key on feed. My gauge works fine. Wayne Schmiedlin 608-837-3948 need

Thanks a lot Wayne, I was thinking of doing the same thing but was concerned
about possible spark problems near the gas tank. I have the fuel gauge out
right now but I do not want to take it apart (old and shacky fingers) so I
may do what you suggest..

I see in my Woodenboat Magazine that there is an Antique and Classic Boat
Festival in Hartwell Georgia the weekend of March 29-April 1. It's at the
Hartwell Marina which should be a great launching place for some Amphicars.
Anyone interested in going? I'll meet you there.

O.K. so I work slower than most of you, but finally after two months, I have
my wanderer off the jacks. We took her out for a test drive today. I
replaced the two kinpin bushings and the big stubaxle bushing in the right
front assembly. The steering is much tighter now and she drives straight
and true up to about 55 mph. At 50-55 she begins to wander a little, but
not nearly as bad as before at 40mph. Next, I plan to instal the steering
box brace described in this months news letter. I notice that, with the
wheels on the ground, the steering box pivits about 1/2 an inch when turning
the steering wheel from side to side. Is that normal or excessive?

Subject: Sunday Swim on the Rock River

We had 43 degrees here on Saturday and couldn't find time to break
out the swimming gear due to our 9 year olds BD party/sleep over,
those girls stayed up way past my bedtime.
We did however find time this 30-degree Sunday afternoon to check
fluids and fire Her up.
After warming up we headed to the Anchor Inn on the Rock River in
Beautiful Downtown Newville.
We checked the bilge plug more than twice and checked our door locks
a few times just to be sure we hadn't forgotten anything, it's been a
long time since we had her out.
I've never gone in so slow, we inched her in and that's all it took
to bring those "Only an Amphicar person knows this feeling smile"
smiles across our faces.
It felt great, we did a trip under the bridges and waved to the
traffic on I-90, cars were also slowing down on the Hwy 59 Bridge to
see what they could see. We came out and went back in 3 of 4 more
times just for the fun of it.
We did have a good first swim of the year.
No bilge.
