I just wanted to reintroduce myself to the group since I am not=20
listed on the "members list" of the club newsletter because I joined=20
too late to make the list.
I recently aquired a white '67 and probably have one of the shortest=20
stories from time of first site to purchase. The first time I saw=20
them in use was at last July's swim-in in Celina. I had heard a story=20
on some local radio station about 2 days prior to the swim-in and=20
since I was only about 3 hours away in Michigan I decide I and the=20
family had to see these things. Since then it's been an almost=20
constant search for a decent one for an amount that I could sell to=20
the wife. It has really consumed me for the past 7 months and I have=20
read every e-groups posting since then and have learned a lot from=20
all of you.=20
Thanks to Eric(yellow) who took pity on us in Celina and gave a=20
family of 5(yes 6 of crowded in with the top up) a swim. My wife=20
actually got the invite and it must have been like the old story of=20
the nice looking woman hitch hiking- after the guy stops, thinking=20
it's just the woman, the rest come out of the bushes. I don't think=20
he had any idea what he was getting into. It was a thrill and we have=20
showed many people the video.=20
Apologies to everyone for standing on the dock between the two ramps=20
and shamelessly putting my two year old up to asking everyone for a=20
ride as you guys came out of the water knowing that, of course, I=20
would have to acompany him if anyone took him up on it.
I look forward to joining you at future swim-ins, this time with a=20
car.

I think Tommy is on to something good here. I emailed him to request more =
info
on the heater duct blower he selected. He mentioned the manufacturer and I
found the blowers in the West Marine (http://westmarine.com) catalog. It
appears to me that these blowers might be easily fitted inside the existing
Amphicar fan housing, at least on the early heater units located below the =
gas
tank, although I haven't taken mine apart yet to check. Might be a very co=
st
effective retrofit for those replacing a defective motor or to get more air
flow.

The blower unit is described on attwood's site:
http://www.attwoodmarine.com/Products/parts.asp?ProductID=3D433&path=3Dvent=
ilation&category=3D2&gtype=3D2&categoryname=3DVentilation+Equipment&typenam=
e=3D4%22+Air+Hose&headername=3DVentilation+Equipment

Thanks Tommy for the good tip. Any additional installation information wou=
ld
certainly be very welcomed.

Good morning Greg, nice note of getting rides in Celina, we were at=20
Celina last year also and were Amphiless then too, we did however=20
purchase one very soon after returning home. My wife, 2 little girls=20
and myself put many miles, land and water on it before winter set in,=20
it was the most fun we've had ever. We met many other great Amphi=20
people last year and hundreds of curious on lookers at different=20
places we put in.
Are you coming to Celina this year?

My entire body was able to acclimate to one day of warm weather. Then
boom back to zero wind chills. My new 64 might be trapped on east coast.
For how long who knows? I spoke with City of De Pue and of course they
are excited about the Amphicar invasion. Early after noon we leave boat
club and cruise (via pavement) to Lake De Pue. Depending on river
conditions we can travel back to boat club via river or road. Dash
plaques are ordered. Maybe I can get Charles Gould to come out to cook!

Welcome Greg! Glad to have you with us!
I may be able to beat your "shortest time to buy" story tho. It was late
summer of '97 before I even knew what an Amphicar was...and by October 1st =
I
had one. I casually looked at one nearby, then drove to Roger Sallee's in
MO. We took a ride in one of his cars, and I bought another one he had tha=
t
was in the body shop. It came home in pieces, and by December it was on th=
e
road. May of '98 we took our first test dip, and by July we headed to Lake
George, New York for the 5th Amphicar Club Swim In.
We haven't stopped since!

Enjoy your new Amphicar lifestyle!
Marc Schlemmer

Subject: Re: Saggy Top

Tommy, my top irons also sagged, and this is what I did to "fix" them:

FIRST: The hinge at the back window would not let the top irons get close e=
nough to the window to let the rubber gaskets make a seal, and this forced =
the top irons down enough to touch the roll-up windows (caused sag). The h=
inge would close before it should have. I had to grind out some of the mate=
rial between the hinge ends to allow the top irons, above the windows, to a=
t least straighten out. They still sagged, but they could come up to the c=
orrect position. The bar that goes from the pivot point to the hinge (abo=
ut
20-21 inches long) seemed to be too long - it wasn't pulling the top irons =
above the roll-up windows upward as it should.

SECOND: The "bar" needed two things: to be slightly shorter and to "pull" f=
rom a higher point. I ground the head off the rear pivot point rivet and s=
napped the "bar" loose from the rivet. I then heated the bar red hot about=
two inches from the loose end, used a pipe wrench and bent it down so that=
the end of the bar is about one inch lower than original. This makes the b=
ar shorter and it pulls from a point above its previous position. This cau=
ses the top irons to snap upward when you put the top up.

This also leaves you with a pivot rivet with no head. I put a kink in a sm=
all piece of metal and put two small bolts into it to hold the bar onto the=
rivet. You could probably drill a small hole into the end of the pivot st=
ud, tap it, and put a bolt and washer on it to hold it in place.

None of this work shows when the top is up, and it doesn't interfere with f=
old down.

Related matter: my top irons were too narrow - there was a large gap betwe=
en the back window and the rubber gasket. I cut the "fixed" cross member, i=
nserted a short rod inside of it (the cross member is a pipe), widened the =
top irons until they sealed against the windows, then drilled a hole throug=
h each side of the "pipe." and put a small hard bolt through and tightened =
it. I put a pad over the whole thing so it wouldn't show.

Earl
