Back when I was intending to keep my server at my house, and we were
designing it, I made allowance for a cutover panel and a generator out
in the garage. I figured that a generator was a requirement in any
case. After I moved the server to a local isp, I didn't buy the
generator. Needed it only a couple of times until the ice storm.
Heather convinced me to buy a generator the day before the ice storm
started. The cutest little very quiet Honda generators weren't
designed to operate at sub-freezing temperatures, and people who had
them broke them. I got a John Deere. In the end, insurance paid for
half, and FEMA paid for the other half. If I'd already had a
generator, neither entity would have paid anything.
