Re the Home Despot book ...
> Well, what do you think of it? Is it worth the $25?

I think it will be. It's a clue source, gives the basics for just
about every kind of home improvement job for the Compleat Idiot. Each
job is calibrated with a skill scale (3 out of 7 in carpentry, 2 out
of 7 in plumbing, and so on), estimates of how long a typical job will
take (depending on skill level), and a list of stuff you'll need
(tools and materials separately). The instructions are step-by-step
with color pictures, and scattered throughout are sidebars: tips on
what to look for in tools, tips for economizing, "oops" for how to fix
common mistakes, safety alerts, and so on. It's not pushing Home
Despot specific supplies.

It doesn't have lots of detail (specifically, I will need to use
leveller goop on my bathroom floor before I can lay the floor tile,
and it doesn't talk about leveller), but it's a single book that will
serve as starter information for just about any job I need to do. I
will probably go to the library for details and hardcore information
as needed.
