MIT's wireless networking infrastructure has been installed to support the academic mission of the Institute. The technology used, based on the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard, works in the 2.4Ghz radio band, a shared part of the radio spectrum. In order to limit interference with MIT's network infrastructure, the Institute asks that members of the MIT community avoid the use of devices that work in the 2.4Ghz region, such as some cordless phones. Users wishing to deploy wireless LAN technology in a small office or lab environment may do so under certain restrictions, please see here for details. Users wishing large area/departmental coverage should contact Information Systems to arrange for MIT-maintained service.
