I have the Dell Latitude from the MCC, and have spent a few days playing with it, trying Win 3.1, Win95, and Linux. Overall it seems okay, although a bit lacking in some features, mainly no audio support. Out of the box it reconized our recomended PC Cards for modem and ethernet, which I think is a first under DOS/Windows. It also worked fine under Win95. Under Linux I found a bug with the display that makes using a text display basically useless. X worked fine but as many people use text mode also, especially when setting up the machine and doing maintaince, I think this is a big problem. I for one wouldn't use this machine due to this problem. I did confirm on the Linux Laptop web page that this is a known problem with Latitudes and that a Dell engineer is unofficially looking at the problem. Apparantly it is considered a BIOS problem, and I did flash upgrade the BIOS to the latest version which did not affect the problem. At this point I should pass the machine along to the next person on the team that wants to look at it. Whoever is next should let me know how they want it setup, currently it has Win95 and Linux on it. Also, keep in mind that this machine has a 520Meg drive and 8Meg RAM, so it is not the configuration on the list we looked at during the last meeting.
