Yep, it's getting close, and we're finally getting our act together.
Sort of. This message is a little long, but things are complicated.
Please read it all!

The Team:

Here's the list of folks who are going (13 total):

Chris Murphy chris
Helen Webb hwebb
Ed Craig craig@mitvmc
Ron Hoffmann hoffmann
Jon Rochlis jon
Anne LaVin lavin
Kevin Cunningham kcunning
Scott Thorne thorne
Tom Coppeto tom
Chris VanHaren vanharen
Carla Fermann carla
Steve Neiderman wade
Alex Prengel alexp

Pledges:

Most of you all should have gotten your form from the MS Society by
now. But, instead of using the pledge form they sent, we thought that
it might be easier to just use a "team" form, and then total them all
up. Later today I'll be sending out mail to "infosys" begging folks
for money, and we'll have one person in E40, 11 and E19 responsible
for going around and bugging people in person. Also later today, I'll
be bringing the magic forms by the various other buildings. In
addition, if you want a copy of the form for yourself to gather
non-work related pledges, each contact person in each building will
have extras.

The MS Society form allowed folks to do "per mile" pledges, but for
accounting and pledge gathering simplicity we decided to decree that
we'll only take flat pledges. Since we're doing this "as a team" and
folks will be riding different distances, we'd go nuts trying to track
down all the pledes, we thought.

Getting to the Vineyard:

I'd like all of you to please send me information on whether you're
interested in driving to Wood's Hole, whether you'd be willing to
carry along extra passengers, how many people and how much luggage
and/or bikes your car can hold, whether you have a bike rack (and
whether it goes on your car) and how many bikes it can carry, and
whether you'd be willing to have someone *else's* bike rack on your
car, if you don't have one. (Got that?)

I also need to know who wants to go down when. The options so far
are:

	Friday evening
	Saturday sometime
	early Sunday morning

If it's either of the first two, see "Lodging, below.

If you drive, you'll have to leave your car in Wood's Hole, since
there are no more car slots available for next weekend, and anyway
it's really expensive. There are parking lots run by the Steamship
Authority for just this purpose. If the ones nearest to Wood's Hole
fill up, they send you to Falmouth, and you can bike or take one of
their buses from there. It's not a bad ride.

One bus line (the name escapes me, but I'll find it) allows you to
bring your bike on the bus (in the luggage area) for a few dollars
above the cost of the bus ticket. The buses run pretty frequently.
If anyone wants to try it this way, I'll find out more info.

Any crazy people who want to RIDE DOWN on Saturday may do so. Have
fun. :) (Jon Rochlis, Tom Coppeto and I have maps of the Boston to
Cape Cod bike trail we can lend you, if you like.)

Lodging:

We've reserved Cec D'Olivera's house in Oak Bluffs for Saturday night.
It is currently still free for Friday night, so if anyone wants to go
down Friday evening, that's a possibility. The house costs $50 per
bedroom being slept in. There are 6 bedrooms as follows:

double bed with own bath off room
	double with porch off room
	2 single beds
	2 single beds
	double bed
	double bed and single bed

Scott Thorne has also graciously offered the use of the spare beds in
his house in Vineyard Haven (Probably only for Saturday night.) The
advantage here is that it's free, but you have to bike an extra 3
miles or so from his house to Oak Bluffs on Sunday morning. He has 2
double beds and 2 single beds free.

And, if you know someone else on the Vineyard and you'd like to stay
there, of course you're free to do that, instead!

So I need to know where you'd prefer to stay, and which nights, and
what sort of room you'd like and who you're going to share it with
(if anyone.) (There, that was put tactfully, wasn't it?) :)

SO, IN SUMMARY:

I need to know, asap:

(1) Do you have a car you'd be willing to drive? Do you have a
bikerack? If not, would you be willing to put someone else's rack on
your car? How many people and/or bikes can you carry?

(2) How would you like to get to the Vineyard (bus, car, bike)

(3) What night(s) do you anticipate spending on the Vineyard?

(4) If you're spending one or two nights on the Vineyard, where do you
want to stay? (Cec's house or Scott Thorne's, or "other")

Thanks for reading all this...I think that's everything. Call or send
me email if you've got any questions, suggestions, flames, etc.

Anne

Well, folks, it looks like a small miracle has occcurred. As of last
night we were actually OVER the minimum $ we needed to ride; we have
places for everyone to sleep, and transport there and everything. So
here's the official poop:

  Name username date Cec/Scott

Steve Neiderman wade sat 6:30 ferry Scott

Scott Thorne thorne fri Scott :)

Kevin Cunningham kcunning sun a.m. -

Alex Prengel alexp sun a.m. -

The drivers (the non-indented names up there) who are hauling other
folks are: Chris Murphy, Ron Hoffman and Chris Vanharen. Could
everyone in each car please get in touch with their driver and make
arrangements to meet up some convenient place and time? Cool.
Everyone assume that they'll be going back with the same people they
go down with. If you want to deal with switching around, figure it
out yourselves. :)

The plan:

Hang around doing whatever we all feel like all day Saturday. Entropy
will likely prevail, but some contingent of people will go to the
supermarket on the Vineyard Sat afternoon to buy food for dinner.

Dinner on Saturday will be at Cec's house at around 8 pm. If you want
eat dinner elsewhere, feel free, but please tell me so we'll know how
much food to buy. If you have special dietary needs, tell me and
we'll try and buy the right stuff. Transport (by car) from Scott's
house to Cec's and back will likely be provided (thank you, Scott) so
the folks staying at Scott's should probably arrange to have their
bikes at his house by around 7:30 pm Saturday. (Or ride back and
forth to dinner on your bike. Be warned that the ride is about 3
miles, and the road is kinda dark, so you should have lights and
reflective clothing.)

Sunday morning I figure the two groups plus the Sun. a.m. arrivees
should just plan on converging at the High School at a bit before the
10 am checkin time. (Looks like most folks will be riding either the
25 or 50 km rides, and they both leave at the same time.)

What to bring:

Those folks staying at Scott's should bring a sleeping bag if they
have one. Cec's place has linens for all the beds. (Well, so does
Scott, but we're trying for minimum impact, here, on the Thorne
residence.) Everyone bring towels if you have room to carry them. If
you don't have room, there are some extras.

We'll probably know what the weather will be on Sunday by, oh, Monday.
So, plan on everything. I'd suggest for riding clothes: shorts,
t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, warm bikie jersey or sweater, wind
breaker, tights, rain suit, long fingered gloves, regular bike
gloves, HELMET.

Bring along your own munchies for the ride, or plan on buying them for
yourself on Saturday. (Fig newtons travel well, we've found. Dried
fruit, bananas, yucky energy bar things, whatever works for you. The
ride organizers will probably also provide some sort of munchies.)

If you have any fun games or favorite music tapes (there is probably a
boombox with a tape player at Cec's house), bring those.

Summary:

(1) folks not driving please contact your drivers to arrange schedules.

(2) come by my office before you leave to pick up maps and info if ya
want them.

(3) drop off your pledge sheets in my office by the end of today, if
you can, so I can total everything up and make copies of it. If you
can't do this, no biggie, but it would be nice.

(4) tell me whether you're coming to dinner on Saturday, and if you
have any special food needs.

(5) If you need to borrow any bikie clothing, tell me. I might have
something you could use.

I think that's everything. If I've left anything out, well, fire me. :)

Hi, everyone! Thanks for coming! I certainly had a good time, and I
hope you all did, too. We raised somewhere over $1300 (I've still got
a few extra pledges coming in, and I don't have the exact total) so we
all get sweatshirts as prizes. As a rough guess, it looks like we
rode a total of 565 km, what with breakdowns and bailouts of various
sorts. Pretty cool!

If you've got an amusing anecdote that Kevin hasn't heard yet
(remember he only came down on Sunday, and missed any Saturday
excitement, and all the fun things that happened when we went home on
Sunday :) please send mail to him so he can include it in the article
for the CSS newsletter.

A few last bits of bureaucratic stuff:

(1) if you have a pledge form yourself, please gather your money and
bring or send it and the pledge form to me, and I'll send in the whole
pile all at once. (If folks give you cash, keep it and write a check
to the MS society yourself, or give it to me and I'll do so)

(2) EVERYONE fill out their yellow sheet they were given at the end of
the race (and don't forget to write down your sweatshirt size and
circle the "sweatshirt" line on the front.) Bring or send those to
me, and I'll send 'em all in with the pledges. If you've lost your
form, I'll send you a copy.

(3) Anyone who stayed at Cec's house please send me $25 (if you
haven't done so already.) Cash or a check made out to me is fine.

(4) If you haven't already done so, please send me $4 for dinner on
Saturday.

(5) If you all saved your numbers, how about writing your name on it
(might take some sort of permanent marker) and send that to me, too?
I may take Ron's suggestion and see if the folks in building 11 want
to put one of our team pictures up in the glass case on the infinite
corridor, and the numbers might be fun to include.

Sooo...take care of those sore muscles and sunburn, and think what
neat stuff we can do Next Year... :)

Hi, guys! Guess what? Our team on the MS ride was the #1
money-raising team! That means that we all get prizes, in addition to
our sweatshirts. The lady called and said that everyone can pick what
they want, among these (sort of random and not all that attractive,
actually) choices:

	bike helmets (size SMALL)
	bike shorts (size EXTRA LARGE)
seat bags (colors neon yellow, neon pink and 1 black)

So. The lady was a little clueless about bikie stuff, and couldn't
tell me brand names or anything. And the stuff was all donated, which
is why the sizes are so weird...

Tell me which prize you'd like (yep, we can all fight over the black
seat bag) and I'll send her the list. If you don't want anything,
just tell me that, too.

Thanks, and congratulations!

Chris,

I've sent mail to all the known bike riders in W91 to see if anyone would
like to serve as the W91 contact for the Martha's Vineyard ride. I'll
let you know if anyone responds in the next day or two. In the mean time,
if you're in a hurry to send out IS-wide mail, you can put me down as the
W91 contact, even though I probably won't be able to go on the bike ride
this year.

Hi Chris,
   I think I'd like to ride..(the 30 mile route). My name,etc is:
	Eleanor Shavell
	ESHAVELL@HARDY.MIT.EDU
	253-0799
	t-shirt size - large
I;m not sure yet about the transportation issue - probably I can
provide a ride to one person

Do we ride as a group? Do we collect pledges as a group?

Thanks a lot, and let's hope for good weather.

No car, but Jon and I have a bike rack. (Two, maybe 3 bikes' worth)

I'll come by and get an entry form one o' these days.

Hi Chris,
I'm planning on doing it. I've got my own transportation, but I'm afraid
I don't have any room to bring people down.

Also, I've put a ferry schedule in Techinfo under potluck.

MITAC used to offer discounted ferry tickets I thought.

take a trip to the vineyard and help the IS bikers out.

Hello,
I'm planning on doing 'Le Tour de Vinyard.' So sign me
up! I can turn my forms into Jim Repa down here in W91. For transportation,
I've got a Mazda Navajo, but no rack, so I can carry at most 2 bikes,
including my own. I take a size large in a T-shirt.

Hi,
I sent my registration in yesterday (along with 2 friends actually) but
I didn't specify a team - which ferry are you taking?? I requested the
8:15 one.. I'm assuming we don't actually ride together (since I imagine we
are riding different distances anyway) - I have a ride there, but unfortunately
have no room for others -

get together briefly next week to make sure of lodging and directions,
as well as taking care of any final questions. Does anyone have a
problem with meeting in E40-316 at 11:00 Tuesday?
