For ten days this month, the Depart- ment of Physical Plant will make containers available forrecycling cata- logues and some types of books. From December 7-17, 9am-6pm, members of the MlT community may drop materials in red dumpsters at five locations: the Sloan Lot by Bldg E52, the Ford Lot by Bldg E19, behind the north side of Bldgs 56 and 16, between Bldgs 13 and 11, and in the Kresge Lot. Items that will be accepted include telephone directories, course catalogues, MIT Press catalogues, magazines, pa- perback books, Sears & Roebuck-type catalogues, manilla folders, hanging file folders (without the metal supports), Reports of the Treasurer, Reports to the President and file stock. The materials will be recycled into paper products. "People can pretty much clean out their offices if they want," said Jennifer Combs, ground services coordinator at Physical Plant. Hardcover books, paper clips and metal folder supports cannot be recycled (although staples are acceptable). White paper also should not be placed in these re- ceptacles. Materials may be brought in paper bags or cardboard boxes but not plastic bags. Whether this type of recycling dropoff will be repeated depends on the success of this program. The more material that's dropped, the lower the unit cost to MlT and the more likely it is that the company taking it will be willing to do so again, Ms. Combs explained. Anyone with questions can call her at x3-7671.
