Subject: getting a PC for dorm room

I am a graduate student living in Edgerton, where we have ethernet
connections in our rooms.  I am about to order a PC but I need to
know what exactly I need to be able to connect to the University system.
In particular, I have the following questions:

1. I am looking at a computer with two type II and one type III PC card slot.
Do I need one of these cards?  

2.  Will I have compatibility problems if I buy
a certain brand, or will I be fine with any PC-compatible brand?

3. What do I need to "athenatize" my computer.  Can I use a mail handling
program on my PC, or do I need to use the athena programs.

Thanks for your help.  Any other help for a clueless student are appreciated.
