The confused one.

If you want the "*" to be there, you can touch /etc/nocrack. This was
mainly added for the dialup DECstations, and I guess for fun I put it
into xlogin as well. I don't know for sure that it has no detrimental
effects on X logins, so it doesn't happen by default.

While I'm here, I forgot to mention that the new xlogin stuff also
puts your console tty into utmp, so that things like talk & write will
send output to the console appropriately.
