Subject: OggSQUISH 0.96 series lossless compressor release
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 19:37:02 +0900
From: Monty <xiphmont@cs.titech.ac.jp>

Hello,

To all of you who thought that the Ogg project died and went away, we were
just busy. Also, as a note to those who haven't looked for the OggSQUISH web
pages recently, they have moved to a new port number; the correct URL is:

http://deskfish.cs.titech.ac.jp:8001/squish/
The password for source code is ra77m4t477. I'll also be putting executables
on the alpha page soon.

An alpha release of 0.96 is now available on the alpha page. For the most
part, it is a test of the new Virtual Ogg Machine and is lossless only.
However, pending bug fixes, this bitstream format will be supported in future
releases of Ogg. As soon as we remove the bugs we can find, and add the last
few lossless features that aren't finished (see the alpha and update pages for
details), this series will be a beta release with un-passworded source
available to the net at large.

Note that this version *does not* support lossy compression, and cannot
decompress bitstreams from the Ogg version of a year ago. Of course, lossy
compression will be added back into the codec at the earliest possible time.
Expect a beta lossless release around April.

Also, updated (mainly clarified) distribution terms are on the Web pages.
There are no fundamental changes from before, but please read these terms
before downloading. Also, if you do have trouble with the codec in any way,
or you'd like to see something changed/added, do take the trouble to send me
mail.

Monty
