The ten-stock group's Relative Strength dropped last week to 23 from 90 just eight weeks earlier. That means more than three-quarters of the 197 industry groups tracked by Investor's Business Daily have performed better in the past 12 months. Since Jan. 1, the group has picked up 30%, thanks to gains taken early this year. The Standard & Poor's 500- stock index, by comparison, is virtu- ally unchanged. One of the few stocks in the group that has con- tinued to perform well in recent weeks is Calhoun, Ga.-based Car- riage Industries Inc. It has tacked on more than 170% since Jan. 1. In the past two quarters, Carriage has pumped out earnings in- creases of 388% and 222%. The company makes carpeting for the manufactured housing, recreational vehicle and marine markets. Another Georgia-based carpet producer, Shaw Industries Inc., has tacked on more than 50% since Jan. 1, although most of that gain was taken during the first quarter. Shaw has also seen its pro- fits soar this year. In the past three quarters, earnings were up 1,300%, 100% and 33%. This article is copyright 1992 Investors Business Daily.
