With its inauguration and the continuing expansion of Metro Rail, we're finally on our way to comprehensive mass transit for Southern California. It's too bad that Metrolink's predecessor, CalTrain, wasn't allowed to flourish when it began nearly 10 years ago. Remember CalTrain? I do. It was just like Metrolink--train service from Moorpark to downtown Los Angeles. I rode from the Van Nuys station to Union Station for $1.75 each way. Of course, CalTrain was a good idea, but it lacked the support of former Gov. George Deukmejian, a close ally of the railroad lobby. The railroads considered CalTrain an inconvenience, and they did their best to cancel and delay many trains and inconvenience riders in order to drive CalTrain into the ground. I've moved three times and changed jobs twice since the days of CalTrain. Now I live in West L.A., and work primarily in Santa Monica. I'm eagerly awaiting the proposed Metro Rail Exposition Boulevard to Santa Monica line, which will once again link my home and job via quick rapid transit. JON C.
