The county Department of Social Services provided 1,549,004 county residents with assistance in September, contrasted with 1,090,459 people two years earlier. This September's figure was also an increase of 23,435 from August, said Carol Matsui, a spokeswoman for the department. "This increase is a pattern we've seen for 43 consecutive months," Matsui said. "The major reason is the recession." This article is copyright 1992 The Los Angeles Times Home Edition.
