Tanaka, 34, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana and the author of five books. He was known primarily for his work on statistical models, which he fashioned from psychological studies. His research led to studies about how jurors decide cases, the effects of stress, and the effect abuse has on women. He was born in Los Angeles and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UC Berkeley. Near Bondsville, Ill., on Nov. 3 after an automobile accident.
