Mary-Chapin Carpenter is "the newly crowned Country Music Assn. female singer of the year" and Yearwood is soon seen on your cover. I do not deny Yearwood her talent. But it would appear that, for The Times, her "cover girl" looks and record sales don't hurt her either. I've met Carpenter. She seems to care less about gracing covers and more about "the conscience of country music." Therein lies her class. Vince Gill and Travis Tritt showed some too in their short profiles.
