India often attracts visitors who love quaintness and hence enjoy being fooled by elite apologists for the status quo. Having lived a year in India, I see the drain as mainly gain. "Non-Resident Indians" (NRIs) accomplish much more than stay-at-homes, being freed from stifling bureaucracy, traditions and "communalism" (apartheid). For a realistic view of NRIs, read their monthly California magazine: India Currents. And for an honest Indian view of India's injustices--not just another outside gape--look for the only India feminist magazine, Manushi. J.
