I think his action well warranted. I understand his logic. Would you send a reporter to cover an event in another country if they did not speak the language? I noted that The Times did not submit to Lee's request of a black interviewer. Big surprise! The Times ignored Lee's request and instead wrote an article that tried to paint Lee as a racist. If The Times had no interview, why write an article at all? It seems to me that the intent of the article was to punish Lee for speaking up where he feels there is injustice. The Times could use its power to honestly enlighten its readers by sending a journalist that Lee could relate to for an interview; instead The Times uses it as a tool to try to keep Lee and others like him down and the privileged few empowered.
