"We accepted his letter of resignation as a party member," a spokesman for the majority Democratic Liberal Party said. On Tuesday, Kim was on his way to the central city of Taegu, where he planned to announce his defection to the opposition United People's Party, when he was stopped by plainclothes security men at a roadblock, an aide said. He was taken out of his car by about 20 youths and whisked back to Seoul early Wednesday, the aide said. The opposition holds Roh responsible. A presidential aide said that the president had ordered his aides to summon Kim upon hearing of his plans. He did not say whether Roh had talked to his brother-in-law.
