I started the recorder, a horrible instrument." Bernheimer should have questioned Salonen on that one. Was he not mature enough for the recorder? Did he play a cheap recorder, have a poor teacher or no teacher? To dismiss the recorder, which is played by more people worldwide than any other instrument, is unthinkable. Salonen may have a beautiful relationship with the Philharmonic's musicians, but he certainly has not endeared himself to recorder players.
