"He's practiced a little bit, but it looks like he's running on a flat tire," Donahue said. "We really need him." John Barnes, who transferred to UCLA last spring after UC Santa Barbara dropped its football program, will start his third game of the season for the Bruins. Barnes completed 15 of 33 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in last week's 48-12 loss to California. He has completed 26 of 53 passes for 267 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Freshman Ryan Fien, who was sidelined because of a hip injury last week, will backup Barnes. Fien has completed nine of 27 passes for 73 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in two games. After averaging 29.6 points in winning three nonconference games, UCLA has averaged 7.8 points in losing its first five Pac-10 games. The Bruins went 10 quarters without scoring an offensive touchdown before scoring against Cal. . . UCLA hasn't lost six consecutive games since 1943, when it lost its first seven. . The Bruins lost five in a row in 1989 and were winless in the final six games of 1989 and the 1990 season-opener. . . .
