The Yankees had contended the expansion draft was invalid because the Florida Marlins have not compensated them for the territory that belonged to the Yankees' Ft. Lauderdale farm team. In the draft, New York lost third baseman Charlie Hayes and catcher Brad Ausmus to the Colorado Rockies and outfielder Carl Everett to the Marlins.
