Wisse's book, "If I Am Not for Myself: The Liberal Betrayal of the Jews," reads more like unconditional acceptance of the racist opinions in the book rather than a serious critique. I find it appalling that The Washington Times legitimized this blatant anti-Arab tirade by including it in its pages. Mrs. Wisse charges that modern-day liberals have strayed from their traditional ways because they have come to see the Palestinians, rather than the Jews, as the true victims in Israel. Mrs. Wisse argues that liberals have fallen prey to pro-Arab propaganda and political manipulation, and categorically accepted the Palestinian claims of victimhood without bothering to determine their truth. Apparently, the complete lack of political or civil liberties, and the severity of the punishment meted out to the Palestinians in criminal retribution is not sufficient proof. Mrs. Wisse's assessment that the Arabs hate the Jews primarily because they themselves have never come to terms with the modern world is an insult to Arabs everywhere. Arabic people, and in particular the Palestinians, are highly educated - large numbers of them attend prestigious universities and occupy successful professional positions worldwide. To label them as backward is a gross distortion of the facts. Shame on you for stooping to this level. Perhaps it is precisely the type of propaganda contained in Mrs. Wisse's book that modern liberals have begun to see through. ROBERT J.
