President-elect Clinton most likely will proved the salvation of the Republican Party. At the very least, Mr. Clinton has saved the party from self-destructing in a no-win situation. It would have been irrevocably shattered by another four years of a leadership vacuum, with the perceived voice of Republicanism being the rantings of Patrick Buchanan, Rep. Newt Gingrich, et al. The election proved that the controlling plurality still yearns for the promise of the Great Society. However, its reach has already drained the vitality from the private economy via taxes and social-engineering regulations. We are nearing the time of forced admission that this nation is bankrupt, intellectually and politically as well as financially. It is fitting that the party that legislatively authored the Great Society myth should be without a Republican scapegoat in the White House when the reckoning becomes undeniable, probably within Mr. Clinton's first term.
