You can bank on it. Some chalk it up to the popularity of the Broadway revival, "Guys and Dolls," in which some of the men wear striped suits. In this country, pin-stripe or chalk-stripe patterns are sometimes looked upon as flashy because they became popular during Prohibition and are associated with Al Capone and the gangster era. Some fashion observers believe that stripes have gained popularity because they are clean, crisp, neat and represent investment dressing. Men have always given the nod to neat-as-a-pin pin stripes. Fall's favorite women's wear trend is borrowing some of the best items from men's closets, and that includes pin and chalk stripes. But don't expect rigid, man-tailored suits like those that came our way in the '80s. While the new looks are borrowed from the boys, they are not dictated by them. Many have feminine touches.
