HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Jack Kelly, 65, who played Bart Maverick, brother to James Garner's Bret in the popular television series "Maverick," died Nov. 7. A councilman and former mayor in this Orange County city, Mr. Kelly had suffered a stroke Wednesday. He died at Humana Hospital Huntington Beach, said city spokesman Dave Kelly, who is not related to the actor. Mr. Kelly and Mr. Garner played dapper card sharks on the Western, which mixed comedy with drama and ran on ABC-TV from 1957 to 1962. Unlike typical Western heroes, the Maverick brothers weren't afraid to show fear in the face of danger or run from a gunfight whenever possible. Roger Moore appeared as cousin Beauregard Maverick during one season. Mr. Kelly, who came from an acting family, also appeared in several movies, including "Where Danger Lives," "Drive a Crooked Road," "To Hell and Back, "She-Devil" and "Forbidden Planet." His mother was actress Nan Kelly Yorke, and his sister, Nancy Kelly, appeared in films from the 1920s to the 1950s. Mr. Kelly continued to make cameo appearances on television in recent years, as well as voice-overs for commercials. He was halfway through his third four-year term on the City Council and had been mayor of Huntington Beach from 1983 to 1986. He underwent bypass surgery in May after suffering a heart attack. He had rebounded in recent months, however, and had attended last Monday's City Council meeting. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
