One was quiet and employed and the other loud and an ex-convict, according to her mother. But by 5 p.m. Saturday, the ex-convict was dead - and his rival was taken away in a police car and charged with murder. A man police would identify only as "Ronald" was stabbed to death Saturday in a red-brick row house in the 3600 block of 13th Street NW, where Miss Washington lived with her mother, Jeannie Caldwell, and her mother's fiance. Ms. Caldwell said her daughter had broken up with Ronald and was now seeing Rashad Freed, though she still continued to see Ronald. She had warned her daughter against dating two men. "I kept telling her to straighten up and lose one," said Ms. Caldwell. "But she wouldn't listen." Ms. Caldwell said her daughter has had her share of problems in her 22 years. She has two children who had recently been taken from her because of neglect, Ms. Caldwell said. Ms. Caldwell said she left her daughter Saturday afternoon with Mr. Freed, 41, at home while she went to the store to buy groceries. When she returned about 5 p.m., she was shocked to find D.C. police cars surrounding her house. Ronald was the father of Miss Washington's 4- and 5-year-old daughters and had come over while Ms. Caldwell was out. When police arrived, Mr. Freed could not be found. Thinking he was still inside the house, they slowly tried to clear the area. They carried out Miss Washington screaming from the house, "Mom, I told you I was sleeping." Ms. Caldwell begged police to take her daughter from the house and seemed uncertain of her involvement. "I want Jackie in jail. I can't protect her," said Ms. Caldwell. "She might have taken a life." Guarding the front and back entrance of the home, police learned Mr. Freed was hiding in a neighbor's house. After obtaining a search warrant, they rushed in, guns drawn, and caught him in an alley after a short chase. According to neighbors and Miss Washington's family, Mr. Freed had a job as a landscaper. Ronald had recently been released from prison and was known to be quick-tempered. To residents it seemed strange that Mr. Freed, who they thought was always real quiet, could commit such a violent act. "He doesn't seem like the type to kill someone," a neighbor said as Mr. Freed was driven away in the police car. But Miss Washington's mother had another idea. "He worked all day and was just blindly in love," Ms. Caldwell said. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
