Anton White, a neighborhood resident, is wanted in connection with a Nov. 3 triple slaying and the Oct. 6 murder of 24-year-old Arvelle Ricardo Williams, 24, a police informant, according to officials. Investigators believe Mr. White may be the head of a loosely knit drug gang based in LeDroit Park that has been responsible for a number of violent crimes there in the past year. "One thing is for sure, there are a lot of people up there who are afraid of him," said a homicide investigator working on the case. Investigators have been looking for Mr. White for more than a week. They are not sure where he is hiding out and are asking the community's help in finding him. A number of residents in the area have dubbed the gang "the young killers," referring to the teens arrested for committing murders in the community. The warrant for Mr. White's arrest is for failing to appear in court on a drug charge, but investigators say more serious charges will be added after his arrest. Mr. White was arrested in January in connection with an earlier homicide. He was released after prosecutors decided they did not have enough evidence to hold him. The triple slaying occurred about 3:45 p.m. on Election Day. Police said Damani Jwanza Colvin, 18, and his friends Richard Sowell, 17, and Clifford White, 20, were in a car on T Street NW with two other teens when the shooting started. Clifford White, who was driving the car, was shot in the head. He was dead at the scene after crashing his car into a pickup truck parked along the 500 block of T Street NE. Two teens then jumped out of the car and opened fire, killing Mr. Sowell and Mr. Colvin in the back seat. Andre A. Brighthaupt, 16, and an unidentified 15-year-old were arrested Nov. 5 in connection with the slaying. Mr. Williams, who was also a member of the LeDroit Park gang, was shot and killed on the 1800 block of Second Street NW, said police. Officials have not made any arrests in that case but investigators believe his killing is related to the triple slaying. Meanwhile, about 80 area residents gathered last night at the Florida Avenue Baptist Church at a meeting led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson to discuss the violence in their neighborhood. Mr. Jackson, who lives in the 400 block of T Street NW, just a block from the Nov. 3 murders, called for community activism to stem a rising level of "deterioration and death." "The fact is Santa Claus won't solve it and neither will Batman," he said. "We . . . have the awesme burden of changing course." Community activist Richard Sowell, whose son was killed in the riple murder, called for more recreation opportunities for youths. "How many kids do you know that have been killed in community centers or church basements?" he asked angrily. "You don't need more police officers." Anita Rice, president of the LeDroit Park Civic Association, also called for more cooperation. "It's unfortunate, but it's true. The situation is out of hand," she said.
