A native Washingtonian, she attended the old Central High School and Smith College in Massachusetts. In 1932, she received a law degree from George Washington University. After law school, Mrs. Gilbert was admitted to the D.C. Bar, becoming the youngest woman in the Bar to practice before the Supreme Court at that time. She joined the Social Security Administration as a lawyer, helping to establish the legal framework for setting up the agency. In 1945, Mrs. Gilbert left the agency to raise a family and moved to Chevy Chase, where she became an active member and leader for the Community Chest, the Girl Scouts, the Cub Scouts and the Democratic Party. Coming out of semi-retirement, she became a real estate investor in 1959, buying and reselling property in Chevy Chase, Bethesda and Baltimore until her death. Her husband, James B. Gilbert, died of a heart attack in 1991. Survivors include two sons, James Gilbert and Frank Gilbert, both of Bethesda; a daughter, Janet Gilbert Gray of Saudi Arabia; and three grandsons. Services will be held at noon tomorrow at Joseph Gawler's & Sons Funeral Home in Washington, with burial in Rock Creek Cemetery. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
